No sound coming from PC speakers, only from Terminal
« on: January 10, 2020, 12:19:01 am »
opened pulseAutio and went to the configurations tab.  Tried different outputs but only Digital Stereo(HDMI2)Output works but then only plays sounds from my terminal. All other options (output) don't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi roberthein59,

It could possibly help us to help you if you could open a terminal window (e.g. using <Ctrl><Alt><t>) and enter the following command:

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

Then copy the output and post it back here.  ;)

Hi roberthein59, welcome to Peppermint. You may have to go into Alsamixer and enable everything. Open a terminal and type alsamixer, hit enter then press F6 and select the proper driver, usually the third one down. Then scroll across using arrow keys and press on m to enable anything that's muted.
What was I thinking?

not sure how to do a screen shot but I only see one card called Capture...I don't see any options for mute or anything like that.
Sorry, this is all new to me...

ok, I type in alsamixer

terminal window opens with alsamixer v1.1.3
item - Master is showing
if I hit F5 then I can see 2 vertical bars, one for Master, the other for Capture
I hit F2 now seeing item S/PDIF Card - HDA Nvidia with 3 boxes at the bottom

Now what do I do? so lost....  :-\

Thanks for the welcome....I tried a bunch of Linux distros and liked this one the best because it played all video formats. However, now a sound issue...I think it was working when I first installed it...

Update: when I press F6 I see the drop drown of all the drivers. Went into each one and un-muted all of them. Still not sound, only from from my second display terminal.
Even when I open PulseAudio volume control and play with the configurations setting selecting different sources, it does not work.
Going to try and boot to the Peppermint LIVE usb and see what I see. I'm sure it was working correctly when I was testing this out before the install.

when I booted to the live usb, the sound works from my pc speakers. Checked everything in alsamixer...looks the same. Opened volume control and recorded all the settings from the configuration tab. Then booted back in and made the same changes, but again, no sound.
I might have to do a reinstall?

Are your PC speakers the USB device? If so you need to select that in Pulseaudio and then check alsamixer again to make sure the correct device's volume is not zeroed.

just curious but do you think that you may have reset a setting on the Pulse Audio panel? I had a similar situation a while ago and it turned out to be just a setting l had not clicked.
