Can I manually upgrade Peppermint 10 to Peppermint 10 Respin ?
« on: December 30, 2019, 03:37:00 pm »
Here are the instructions to manually upgrade Peppermint 10 to Peppermint 10 Respin .. you use these at your own risk, but they should be safe enough (I've tested them in a VM).

First of all MAKE SURE PEPPERMINT 10 IS FULLY UPDATED before you begin below

Now in Peppermint 10, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /etc/apt/sources.list.d/peppermint.listand make it read:-
Code: [Select]
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/peppermintos/p10-release/ubuntu bionic main
# deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/peppermintos/p10-release/ubuntu bionic main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/peppermintos/p10-respin/ubuntu bionic main
# deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/peppermintos/p10-respin/ubuntu bionic main
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /etc/apt/sources.list.d/peppermint.list.saveand make it read:-
Code: [Select]
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/peppermintos/p10-release/ubuntu bionic main
# deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/peppermintos/p10-release/ubuntu bionic main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/peppermintos/p10-respin/ubuntu bionic main
# deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/peppermintos/p10-respin/ubuntu bionic main
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -v /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/spidersolitaire.desktopthen:
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -v /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktopthen:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get updatethen:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgradethen:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio-equalizerthen:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get autoremovethen:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall arc-color-gtk-themes p7zip-full peppermint-browser-manager peppermint-cursor-resizer peppermint-keyring pulseaudio-equalizer
Now go to:-
Menu > Settings > Customise Look and Feel
and on the "Widget" tab, select the "Arc-Red-Dark" theme, and "Apply" it.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-evdev-trackpoint.confand make it read:-
Code: [Select]
# trackpoint users want wheel emulation

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "trackpoint catchall"
MatchIsPointer "true"
MatchProduct "TrackPoint|DualPoint Stick"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "EmulateWheel" "true"
Option "EmulateWheelButton" "2"
Option "XAxisMapping" "6 7"
Option "YAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

REBOOT.

Once rebooted, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install --reinstall pepirus-icon-theme peppermint-firefox-themer peppermint-thunderbird-themer ice advert-block peppermint-default-settings peppermint-default-session peppermint-settings-panel peppermint-system pulseaudio-equalizerthen:
Code: [Select]
xfce4-panel -r
Now go to:-
Menu > Settings > Peppermint Control Center
and on the "Window Manager" tab, set:-
Theme: Arc-Red-Xfwm4
then close the control center.

Back in the terminal run:
Code: [Select]
sudo mv -v /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktop.dpkg-dist /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktopthen:
Code: [Select]
sudo mv -v /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktop.dpkg-new /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktopthen:
Code: [Select]
sudo mv -v /etc/xdg/menus/peppermint-hierarchical.menu.dpkg-dist /etc/xdg/menus/peppermint-hierarchical.menuthen:
Code: [Select]
sudo mv -v /etc/xdg/menus/peppermint-hierarchical.menu.dpkg-new /etc/xdg/menus/peppermint-hierarchical.menu(if any or all of those last four commands fail, don't worry about it .. it just means the files didn't need renaming)

Open:-
Menu > Internet > Ice
select the "Remove" tab .. and delete/remove the "Solitaire" and "Spider Solitaire" SSB's
then close ICE

Back in a terminal add the two new SSB's by running:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/pinball.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/pinball.desktopthen:
Code: [Select]
cp -v /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktopand just in case anything got stuck, run these 4 commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg --configure -athen:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get updatethen:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get upgradethen finally:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Okay at this point you're pretty much done, except you may want to resize the whiskermenu slightly as the theme change may have left it a bit too tall for its default contents.

Hi

Only one issue for me

zebedee@threadripper-2950x ~ $ cp -v /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktop
cp: cannot stat '/etc/skel/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktop': No such file or directory
zebedee@threadripper-2950x ~ $

during one of the terminal sessions you had a usual "what do you want to do" questions - the default being "N" - I think answering No, maybe why, Solitaire is now not there ?

Regards Zeb...

PS - Thank you so much for doing these upgrade instructions.    I hope your back is on the mend too  :)

I followed the process as written.

I had the same experiences as Zeb.

Well done! Thank you

This was done on a Dell Inspiron 15 which had been installed with Peppermint 10

Does the solitaire SSB have a wooden background when started .. ie. is it the new one (with the wooden background) ?

If you're not sure what I'm asking, please post the output from:
Code: [Select]
cat ~/.local/share/applications/solitaire.desktop

Just now completed the upgrade to P 10R. Boots up super quick and only thing I notice is the nemo creep I was complaining about in the P 10 upgrade from P 9, that is items take a couple of seconds to load up, is still present. I won't know if there is any freezing involved until I do some heavy modifying of files, etc. I was hoping the creep would be gone but it's not.
What was I thinking?

Thanks Mark!  All went well on the laptop.  Question, do I have to make fresh ICE SSBs to take advantage of the bug fix?  I'm still having the same issues in my original Facebook SSB.
