SOLVED: How to set desktop color if Nemo autostart is disabled
« on: December 27, 2019, 10:00:37 am »
Nemo autostart can be disabled under Peppermint Settings Panel - System - Startup & Default Applications. This leaves a gray desktop. How can the desktop be made black?

The reason why you're encountering a grey desktop is because you have switched off Nemo. This is what gets to me when people start fiddling, though I used to too.
Reactivate Nemo and go into
Code: [Select]
Menu/Accessories/Wallpapers
Right at the bottom of the wallpapers screen that pops up is a transparent option, where you can change it's color, next to where it says Automatic, click apply once you have changed it's color to whatever you want.

Nemo controls your desktop from wallpapers to everything else, deactivating it can prove to be troublesome unless you're installing a different Window manager or file manager to control your desktop with. In my view though you shouldn't have to as Nemo is fast enough and is one of the best if not the best file managers out there.  ;D

The nemo-desktop binary has a bug that causes it to use more and more memory, probably indefinitely, if there are too many files on the desktop. Maybe it happens with fewer files too. So I kill nemo-desktop when this happens and lose the feature of files on the desktop, while regular Nemo still works. Would rather nemo-desktop did not autostart, to avoid the trouble of everything slowing down when the swap space is eventually used.

So the question is then how do I keep Nemo as a file manager because it is nice and has a search function too but dump nemo-desktop and have a black desktop with an alternative file manager (which?) or with plain X11 settings?

Pcmanfm solves it.

apt-get install pcmanfm

xed .config/pcmanfm/default/desktop-items-0.conf
Change the font line to this bigger font:
desktop_font=Sans 14
Change this line if another color is wanted for the desktop:
desktop_bg=#000000

Add an autostart item for "pcmanfm --desktop" under Peppermint Settings Panel - System - Startup & Default Applications - Autostart:
Add pcmanfm --desktop
Disable Nemo

Log out and log in.

Pcmanfm is a little snappier too, compared to Nemo. Wondering why it is not preferred.

If you don't mind my asking, why would you want pcmanfm over nemo ?
(specially for desktop control)

Why not have a separate panel with files on instead of going down changing file manager? At least with a panel you have more control and why smother your Desktop with files anyway?  :)

Already have a panel with Files. It is the desktop management that is changed with the above instructions/notes.

"why would you want pcmanfm over nemo ?"

Because nemo's desktop management has a memory leak that eventually slows everything down.

By the way, for regular file management Pcmanfm is just as beautiful and feature-packed as Nemo but snappier. I'd recommend it to the devs.

After testing, I'm seeing zero evidence that nemo-desktop is leaking memory :-\
(in fact it hasn't changed memory usage AT ALL in the 30mins I've been monitoring the process)

We'll not be going back to pcmanfm because:-

a) it's NOWHERE near as feature rich, specially for desktop management.
and
b) It's a dead project.

Sure it's milliseconds 'snappier', but so what if it's nowhere near as configurable and comes with it's own issues ?
(I honestly can't justify "I saved a total of two or three seconds in 'snappiness' today .. oh, but at the expense of possible time wasted by not having my own nemo-action scripts / templates / plugins / etc.)

Let's just put things this way, for every person that has wanted PCManFM back, there were (at a guesstimate) 1000+ that said "Oh you've switched to Nemo, great move" ;)
(in fact I can only think of a handful of times we've been asked for pcmanfm back)

Nemo is also regularly voted (on BDLL) as tying with Dolphin for the best Linux file manager .. and I agree :)

Have you tried having more files on the desktop than will fit in it?

And the point in that is ?

Okay, maybe you've found some fringe case, but I'm not seeing a memory leak under normal circumstances .. and I can't say I've noticed one with an overfilled desktop (and trust me that's my default).

But sure, I'll test the hypothesis.
(won't be hard to do as I normally have a VERY messy desktop, and often overfill it .. so the last space is stacked with icons)

[EDIT]

Testing an overfilled desktop now .. will post back results in about half hour .. though I should add it hasn't climbed since creating the last few files.

Nope, no change after 30+ minutes
(with an overfilled desktop)

The point is maybe drawing the icons on top of each other at the bottom right is what triggers the leak if there are enough icons, or there is a calculation overflow as often happens in extreme cases. Another thing in my setup is that an NTFS drive is mounted at the Desktop directory at boot time. Shouldn't matter but it had to be mentioned. Next time I see it happen, what info should I print-screen?

Interesting...

I'm always watching for mem leaks - mostly because I use Lua in my Conky.

The machine I'm on, right now, has 4 bots running 24/7 in the background, as well as serving as my primary workstation.

Code: CURRENT UPTIME [Select]
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-6 ~
╰─$ uptime
 07:57:02 up 52 days, 14:31,  1 user,  load average: 1.12, 1.18, 1.24
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-6 ~
╰─$
Nemo doesn't appear to have mem leaks here, either, Chief    ;)
