Screensavers on Peppermint 5
« on: August 30, 2014, 12:52:35 pm »
I found that Peppermint 5 does not have screen savers - it uses a program called light-locker instead. But what if you prefer having a screen saver? Here is how to do it:

Click Menu >> Accessories >> Terminal
type:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt purge light-locker light-locker-settings
press <ENTER>
type your sudo password and press <ENTER> again

then type in:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install xscreensaver xscreensaver-gl xscreensaver-gl-extra xscreensaver-data-extra
and press <ENTER>
It will install.

Now, let's make it autorun:

Open a Terminal, Menu >> Accessories >> Terminal
Type in:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/xdg/autostart/screensaver.desktop
press <ENTER>, type in your sudo password, press <ENTER>

and then place inside it the following information:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Screensaver
Type=Application
Exec=xscreensaver -nosplash

Save and close the file.

Choose a screensaver that you like:
To activate go to Menu >> System >> Screensaver

Hope you enjoy this tutorial, check my blog for more tutorials and info.

Thanks PCNetSpec, weird how the myicedventure.blogspot.com and myicedventure.blogspot.co.uk direct to the same site.

I named my blog, My Ice Adventure - because at the time the current version of Peppermint was called ICE.

Blogging is a hobby ;) please leave a comment if you stop by.

I have followed 10i's tutorial but at the end i got the following:

** (gedit:5465): WARNING **: Could not load Gedit repository: Typelib file for namespace 'GtkSource', version '3.0' not found

(gedit:5465): Gtk-WARNING **: Calling Inhibit failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

(gedit:5465): Gtk-WARNING **: Calling Inhibit failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

(gedit:5465): Gtk-WARNING **: Calling Inhibit failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

Is this normal or should something be done about it?

They're only Gtk warnings for gedit and can be safely ignored :)

The first is about a missing package for the gedit "syntax highlighting" plugin .. If you *really* want to get rid of it (but there's no need) you can install gir1.2-gtksource-3.0
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install gir1.2-gtksource-3.0

The others are where GD is trying to access the org.gnome.SessionManager dbus directive, but that directive is not provided. That directive does not exist in Peppermint as we don't use the Gnome session manager .. as I said this is quite normal and can be safely ignored, they're warnings not errors ;)

Don't really use screensavers any more, but in Linux ElectricSheep was always my favourite :)
(ElectriccSheep can be added to xscreensavers)

Years ago in the days of CRT monitors and Windows my favourites were Voodoo Lights (rubbish resolution in this video, so doesn't show off Voodoo Lights very well):

and Snoqualmie (the following video is NOT a good example of what Snoqualmie was capable of, butit's the only one I can find):

Hi VirgoMale8, how's it going?  To get the XScreenSaver daemon to autostart, open a terminal window.  Enter the following command:
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.config/autostart/xscreensaver-autostart.desktop
Copy and paste the following contents into the empty file:
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Name=Xscreensaver Autostart
Comment=Autostart the Xscreensaver Daemon
Exec=xscreensaver -nosplash
Icon=xscreensaver
Terminal=false
Save the file and exit gedit.  Now Reboot or Logout of your current session.  When the new session opens, run the following to command to test if the daemon is working:
Code: [Select]
ps aux | grep "[x]screensaver -nosplash"
The return should read: xscreensaver -nosplash.  You'll find your screensavers located at: menu > Preferences > Screensaver.  That's it  ;)

I noticed in your post, you're advised to run autoremove.  This is advisable, as it will tidy things up and free up some disk space.  In a terminal run the following command:
Code: [Select]
apt autoremove
You should be all set and ready to go  ;)

Hi VirgoMale8, could you please remember to encapsulate terminal outputs with the Insert, Code # function.  For extra long outputs, please use the Spoiler, Sp function.  These preserve the original format of the output.  This makes it easier for future visitors to relate to their own issues.  These functions are found in the forum editor, above the,  :-[ Embarrassed and  the :'( Cry emoticon respectively.  I've done this for you this time - many thanks  ;).
