Airmouse freezes the desktop
« on: December 14, 2019, 07:15:28 am »
Hi,

I have purchased an unbranded airmouse to use when my laptop is plugged in to a TV

The airmouse has also a small keyboard

When I insert the dongle in the usb port and attempt to click on any button on the airmouse, the desktop freezes, and the only thing that works is the mouse pointer, but not the buttons and neither the keyboard

Even if I remove the dongle, the desktop remains frozen

After a while the program that was in focus shuts down and the computer works normally again

I have tried using the airmouse on other computers, smart tv, and with other operating systems in this very laptop and it all worked fine

The airmouse also freezes with the live peppermint

I am running peppermint os ten x64

Can you help?

With the airmouse plugged in (but obviously without doing anything with it) can you post the output from
Code: [Select]
lsusbor does thre simple act of lugging it in crash the system ?

it freezes the desktop as soon as I press any button on the airmouse

if I try to boot up with the dongle inserted, as soon as I try to type the password the system freezes

Well use a separate mouse and keyboard to get the info I'm asking for.

There's no way we can even attempt to troubleshoot this if you're unable to run any commands or post any output now is there ? ;)

That said I doubt we'll be able to do much anyway (beyond possibly trying a different kernel.

Have you tried any other Linux distros that DID work ? .. if so, which ?
(If not, maybe try a Peppermint 9 Live session)

Which versions of these distros ?

My point is it may be some kind of kernel regression in the 5.0 series kernels (and updated xorg stack) that came with the HWE that didn't exist in the 4.15 kernels.
(but there's no way to test this hypothesis without distro VERSIONS)

I mean it seems to work (well kinda) with LibreElec
https://www.reddit.com/r/Addons4Kodi/comments/dyngxx/air_mouse_with_libreelec_issues/
which AFAIK used the 4.14 kernel.

It would really help if you could try Peppermint 9 (even if just as a Live session), if that works we can easily upgrade it to PM10 but keep the 4.15 kernel and non-HWE xorg stack.

Previous versions of Peppermint can be downloaded here:

To manually upgrade PM9 to PM10 but without updating to the HWE kernel and xorg stack, see here:
