Canon Pixma ip2600 (SOLVED)
« on: August 29, 2014, 09:58:15 pm »
I am a newbie and so far pleased with Peppermint 5. Obviously it will take time to get to a reasonable working knowledge of Linus.

Anyone get the Canon Pixma ip2600 printer to work on Peppermint 5? As is common with Canon there is no official Linux driver. (I've had to scrap other perfectly good Canon equipment due to lack of driver updates for Windows.)

I tried the Gutenfree (spelling?) selection using the printer tools. It didn't have the ip2600 but recommended the ip2000 driver.  That didn't work. No other drivers were found,

I deleted the printer. Does this mean I deleted the driver? I know you should not have two drivers for the same printer.  I'm not sure how to find and delete if there are any.

Can you open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run:
Code: [Select]
uname -a
then post the output (what's returned in the terminal) back here.

First you need to install libtiff4 32bit, but that's not in the 14.04 repos .. so we'll download and install the version from an earlier version .. open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
wget http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/t/tiff3/libtiff4_3.9.7-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i libtiff4_3.9.7-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install -f
OK that's libtiff4 installed.

Now you need to add a PPA .. so run:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:michael-gruz/canon-trunk
and hit enter when prompted .. then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt update
then:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt install cnijfilter-ip2600series
Then add he printer in the normal way, selecting:-

Canon > iP2600 Ver 3.90 > Canon iP2600 Ver 3.90 [en] (recommended)

as the driver.

Anyone reading this in the future that is running 64bit Peppermint 5, replace the first 2 commands in the above instructions with:
Code: [Select]
wget http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/t/tiff3/libtiff4_3.9.7-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb
and
Code: [Select]
sudo dpkg -i libtiff4_3.9.7-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb
the rest of the instructions are the same

Voila success.  I can now print via a  USB port.  I must have flubbed something first time around as nothing changed. Then I reran the last two commands and all fell into place.

A nice forum.  I truly appreciate the help.

Now to update as SOLVED.  Next I'll work on printing via my Windows print server.

You're welcome .. thanks for marking the topic solved :)

Make sure you have smbclient installed, and one of the options for adding a printer should be

Network Printer > Windows printer via SAMBA .. then you just have to provide the URI of the printer.

Update. I can now print to the Canon iP2600 via my Vista print server. It took a few tries but once I understood what I was doing it went smoothly. Again, thanks for the help.  So now I can print locally and via the windows print server.
