Firefox problem on Peppermint OS 9
« on: November 19, 2019, 07:08:49 am »
During the last two days, I have Firefox a tab running Youtube crashing frequently. The other tabs work with no problems. I am not sure what the problem is.

When you say crashing is the video buffering? Are you wired or wireless?? What version of Firefox are you using? How many tabs do you regularly have open at the same time?
Also in a terminal could you type and post the results,
to give us an idea of what you're running, copy and paste code below into Terminal. Many thanks  ;D

Also depending on how much Ram you have in your system, how many tabs you can have open at one time. Firefox is Ram heavy.  ;D

I have 16GB of Ram on my machine and with this forum open here is a picture of how much ram at the bottom of the picture where it says memory, the first number is usage.

Hi, I am not in the front of that computer right now but I can answer most of the questions right away.
There is no video buffering - just complete crash with the splash window that asks me if I want to reopen the tab.
I have never had this problem before even with a couple of dozens tabs open with several of them using YouTube.
The computer has 4 GB of RAM. I am using whatever Firefox version came with the Peppermint OS 9.
I’ve been using this computer with Peppermint 9 for about a year and a half or two years. No problems whatsoever.
This current problem might be related to an update, or it maybe a problem with YouTube itself.
I was hoping that someone has seen it before and knows the answer from the top of his or her head.

I've never experienced it before, what is your Broadband like? Maybe do a speed test? If you're wireless and you have other people using the same network for streaming their content, that could affect it. Sometimes though it could be YouTube playing up as, as a site in my opinion it is broken. Do you have your phone connected constantly to Internet as well? Sometimes that can have an affect on other wireless devices. Sometimes with these things a reboot fixes it.  ;D

Have you tried starting firefox in safe mode and seeing if that fixes the issue

With NO instances of Firefox running, open a terminal and run:
Code: [Select]
firefox -safe-modethen when asked, click the "Start in safe mode" button.

Does video still stutter in that instance of Firefox ?

Hi xvc,

I hope that you made a typo in your last reply, where you said

There have been many important security-related updates to Firefox since Peppermint 9 appeared. Have you been making regular checks to make sure that you are using the latest version of Firefox?  ;) It is my opinion that with browsers it is very important that they be kept up-to-date -- for security reasons!
