I *assume* they're talking about shell scripts. If that's true... yes  ;)

So shell scripting is a programming language ?

It's not how I'd define it, but hey ho...

[EDIT]

Personally I'd call whatever was used to program the commands used in the shell script a programming language .. but simply stringing pre-built commands together I'd call 'scripting', not 'programming'.

Similar, but not quite the same .. at least that's how I see it.
(and why I make no claim to be a programmer)

Well, it could be argued that shell scripts are not proper programming language, as defined today, but...

I suppose one could say the same thing about (uncompiled) BASIC code, if you remember those days.

On face value;, and IF the author is talking about shell scripts - there must be a lot of them on GIT  :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying scripting is a less valuable skill, there are certainly programmers that can't script (don't understand the 'real world' requirements of the systems their programs run on) .. I just don't view them as quite the same skill.

[EDIT]

One is authoring software (from scratch) that achieves a specific goal.

The other is utilising (and often expanding the goal of) existing software creatively to provide real world solutions.

Though I must admit there's some overlap there.

You any experience in GUI stuff ?

Like programming a GUI that runs some bash scripts when they're selected ?

That's what I thought, to me scripting isn't a "programming language" .. and yet I suppose it is a "language" (in as far as a learned syntax), and it can be used to automate processes (ie "program" them), so I guess it's all semantic.

I'd certainly appreciate any help from someone that can author desktop application GUI front ends in say python (though it doesn't HAVE to be python, frankly that would allow me to better understand the code if it ever needed modification in the future).
