Wifi Network - disabled (SOLVED)
« on: November 06, 2019, 10:57:11 am »
Hello - I've searched this forum, but nothing seems to help my situation.

I installed Peppermint 10 (alongside Windows 10), and the Peppermint OS indicates (via hardware info) that my little USB wifi adapter isn't enabled.

How do I enable it?

Note: I only have a wireless adapter for internet access - no ethernet.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Here's the output of my hardware for reference:

Is there any output from:
Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep r8712u
if not, run:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe r8712u
did wireless spring to life ?

If not .. unplug the USB wireless adapter .. wait 5 seconds .. replug the USB wireless adapter .. then post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dmesg | tail -n 30

Thank you for your help again!

When I issue the lsmod | grep r8712 command, I get this:

r8712u         176128    0

If I unplug  the adapter, wait about 5 seconds, and then plug it back in, and then issue the command "dmesg | tail -n 30, I get this:
just to be clear - the machine also has Windows 10 on it, and I've booted to a Peppermint OS installation (separate partition).  The wireless adapter runs fine on Windows.

dangeorges@dangeorges-To-be-filled-by-O-E-M ~ $ dmesg | tail -n 30

Can you try something for me...

Run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod r8712u
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe rtl8192cu
did wireless spring to life ?

Be aware if this works it won't survive a reboot .. but we can fix that later.

if it doesn't work, can you post the entire output from
Code: [Select]
lsmod

Please COPY and PASTE the commands from my last response and run then again.

You entered a 1 in one of the commands where you should have entered a lower case L

You did:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe rt18192cu
when it should have been:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe rtl8192cu

[EDIT]

That said, the rtl8192cu driver appears to be getting loaded anyway .. there's some conflict going on here because [07b8:8188] seems to be listed by both drivers.

Can you REBOOT .. then without doing anything else, post the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsmod
again

What happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod rtlwifi rtl8192c_common rtl_usb rtl8192cu r8712u
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe r8712u
did wireless spring to life ?

if not, please post the output from
Code: [Select]
lsmod
again

Sprung to life!  And connected to the wireless router!

Thank you!

Will this survive a reboot?

Also, what exactly was going on that prevented the wifi adapter to be enabled?

No it won't,

it seems two drivers are being loaded for your card because both contain the IDvendor:IDdevice string "07b8:8188" and they're conflicting.

we'll likely need to blacklist the rtl8192cu driver to stop that being loaded automatically.

But before we do that, can you (whilst wifi is now working) again post the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsmod

Okay, run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and add 3 new lines at the bottom that read
Code: [Select]
# BEGIN - blacklist rtl8192cu wireless driver (manually added by dangeorges)
blacklist rtl8192cu
# END - blacklist rtl8192cu wireless driver (manually added by dangeorges)
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

REBOOT to test.
