Installing Peppermint 10 on Chromebook
« on: November 06, 2019, 10:40:26 am »
Hi all,

Recently learned about Peppermint OS 10 and how blazing fast, light-weight, and stylish it is! Needless to say, I want to replace Chrome OS with it, or at least have the option to dual-boot.

Did some research, and unfortunately I haven't found an updated guide on how to install Peppermint OS on a Chromebook so I thought to come here and ask the experts for help! Could someone please point me to an existing guide you trust on how to do so?

Let me know if any info is needed on my part. Thank you!

-Frank

Hey!

Thank you for the welcome and response.

It's an HP Chromebook Model: 14-db0031nr.

I can find no info for that exact model, but as it has an AMD A4 CPU it **may** be possible (ie. at least it's an x86 CPU and not an ARM based Chromebook which would rule out Peppermint).

About the only thing I can do is suggest this as a starting point
https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/HP/Chromebook%2014
(and then just install Peppermint instead of Debian)

WARNING:- You should probably not even attempt this unless you're 100% sure you know how to reinstall ChromeOS should things go wrong

Thank you very much!

I'll read up on the article and, if feasible, I'll go on ahead and try it out while taking the necessary precautions  ;)

Another possible line of investigation is to look at MrChromebox.tech website:

https://mrchromebox.tech/#home

I don't know anything about their bios firmware but they do say they support several versions of the HP Pavilion Chromebook 14 with Intel and AMD processors.

My Acer C710 is still running Seabios  and it works well but this firmware is no longer maintained.

I seem to remember that Chrome OS allows you to make a recovery USB drive on a memory stick so that you can reinstall the Chrome OS system if you have to. Foolishly perhaps I didn't or I lost it but I've never wanted to go back after running linux on it.

Hey guys,

Quick update: After more research and effort as a novice on all of this, I was unsuccessful in installing Linux on this Chromebook (AMD processor / CAREENA).

1) Tried installing Xubuntu and Lubuntu side-by-side using Crouton and it doesn't register my clicks at all..
2) Tried installing the above using chrx (dual-booting), and I cannot access it as when I press Ctrl + L it takes me to this "Alternative Firmware Menu" screen that I cannot navigate through or do anything in.

I'm not daring enough to open the laptop and unscrew the write-protection screw and mess deeper with it. Also learned that some AMD Chromebooks have a hard-time running Linux. In fact, my version (CAREENA) doesn't run GalliumOS at all, which is supposedly the distro specifically for Chromebooks.

Just thought I'd update you all for feedback and awareness in case anyone is in my situation. Can provide more info if needed. Thanks anyway for responses and support!
