How to Completely Wipe Entire HDD from Live USB
« on: November 03, 2019, 02:12:53 pm »
Is there any way? I suppose formatting itself during new installation over the old one is not enough.

Thank you

What makes you say that ? .. are you thinking about security ?

ie. enough for what ?

If it's not about security personally I'd boot the LiveUSB .. load GParted .. and use it to simply delete the partitions (or write a new partition table).

If it **IS** about a secure wipe, then how paranoid do you want to be ?

Put on your tinfoil hat for this one and be prepared for this to take some time, This is called, "Paranoia Will Destroy Ya", This is NOT for the "faint of heart", not for anyone that is in a hurry, it will take quite some time to complete.
Replace sdX with your drive letter:
Do not do this unless you really mean it:

Code: [Select]
 dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sdX bs=1M

When I try to use GParted, I can't delete/format one partition because it returns Unable to delete...

EDIT: I used the DD command in the end and it worked. Thank you. So no, I can't create a new partition table, as it keeps giving me

The good news is, hard drives are cheap.   :D
What was I thinking?

No need for a new drive, the reason Gparted wasn't allowing you to change anything was because you probably had some partition mounted.

In GParted (from a LiveUSB), right-click on all partitions (one at a time) and select "unmount" .. once all partitions are unmounted GParted will allow you to do what you want (including writing a new partition table).

GParted cannot edit partitions (or the partition table) if partitions are currently mounted.
