No Internet after Installing PM 10 x64 [SOLVED]
« on: October 23, 2019, 04:56:48 am »
Hello.  I'm not getting web access via ethernet, nor wi-fi wireless-N PCI-e card on a new PM 10 install.  After noticing this after install, I shut down the PC.  I didn't want to troubleshoot at the time, so I transported the ssd to another (older) PC where ethernet worked & I had no problems at all.  I got PM 10 updated as much as possible in this older PC, and upgraded to the latest available kernel (5.3.7 afaict).  I then tried to run this new PM 10 again in my main PC but moving the ssd back to it, and the same problem occurred--no web access whatsoever.  I even tried transferring the ethernet card from the older PC to see if it would work on the problematic PC, but it didn't.  When I used same PC for PM 7 & PM 9 installs, I was able to at least get web access (although I've always had random anomalies where the web (ethernet) would go out & sometimes force me to reboot or to reset the router to fix in most instances in both PM 7 & 9 previously).  I never run ipv6 and always disable it but it's never caused any issues afaik and have generally not encountered the issues in Win 7 although I use PM OS most of the time.  Thank you for any assistance in advance, and I will check back later today when possible.  My specs are:

1TB WD SSD (used for PM 10 install used in both PC's)

990FXA-UD3 rev.4.0 mobo;
R9 270 GPU
FX-6300 CPU
8GB DDR3 1866
760W corsair AX760 PSU

The specs of the older pc where web access was not a problem:

GA-x38-DS4 mobo
Q6600 CPU
basic gpu (nvidia gt 520 I think)
500W EVGA PSU
8GB DDR2 1066

Hi Linux Lover,

What would really help would for you to post here in your next message the output of the following command:

Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz

run on the problematic computer. Since you have no internet access from it, try booting it to a live usb session and, if you have internet access in the live session, run this command and post the output here. Otherwise (if you still have no internet connection even in the live session) then copy the output to a text file, move that file to the computer that does have internet access and post the resulting file contents here.

I'm sure there is other information about the problematic computer that could help, but someone else with more knowledge of ethernet and wifi problems will tell you what these might be. So, for starters, give us the output of the above listed command (it tells us more details about the machine's hardware).  ;)

Does running a LiveUSB give you internet access ?

Do you get any output from
Code: [Select]
rfkill list
and what happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -rfv ath9k
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -v ath9k
did wireless spring to life ?

I will post the results below, but first gotta tell about general weirdness (which I think may be that Peppermint has issues w/AMD boards, or my Gigabyte board in particular may be the culprit, or just one of the weird Linux issues/quirks).  I've been moving the ssd back and forth to the older PC for updates & getting PM 10 as close to all my settings & programs as my PM 9 install.  I just booted the ssd within the problematic pc and immediately noticed the internet (ethernet) was working...but it only lasted a few websearches, then slowed to a crawl before eventually timing out & giving me the on-screen notification that comes up whenever an event takes place in PM.  I tried to see if wi-fi connected as well but it would not, nor would it see any other available wifi networks beyond mine which I had to use "connect to hidden wireless network" option to access (wifi card never fully connected).  My gut feeling is that there is something terribly flawed with this motherboard due to previous issues I've had including a glaring one of sata port speeds.  The problems seem exclusive to PM since versions 7,9, and now 10 that I've tried.  The data transfers on the problematic PC don't seem to occur in Win 7.  When I used nemo for any transfers or accessing folders in my older PC mentioned above, it felt much smoother in comparison.  When I did data transfers in my problematic PC, it would have noticeable lag/lockups.  There is more details than this but I will expound no further at this time unless requested.  These are the cli results from the problematic PC and thanks again:

Try running:
Code: [Select]
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
then REBOOT.

Once rebooted run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rfkill unblock all
did that make any difference ? .. did wireless spring to life ?

if not, can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
rfkill list
again

Also, USB 3.0 works but USB 2 doesn't.  Not a problem in PM 7 & 9.

I'm just wondering if it's a Kernel thing that your computer does not like? I recently ran into trouble with Kernel 5.0.0 my Ryzen builds did not like it and pulse audio was very crackly. Now there is a way to upgrade from P9 to p10 within P9 without the 5.0 Kernel stack. Link below to the how to that PCNetSpec wrote.

https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,8442.0.html

This will upgrade P9 to P10 without the 5.0 kernel stack, you'll just be using the same Kernel as P9 the 4.15.0-66  the latest one in Ubuntu 18.04 and see if this will solve it. Just follow PCNetSpec's instructions.  ;D

If this does not solve it and as you said you had problems with router in the past, then it might be a case of a new router?

Not only is Peppermint an addictive OS to use.
But so is this Forum :)

This is a strange motherboard...

clatterfordslim: I pretty sure it's not related to kernel since the same kernel (5.3.7) is installed in PM 7 & 9 and web access (for the most part) works there.

rayzer: I installed that .deb and there was no change after the reboot.

I had an idea to try something I remember being mentioned several times by others online troubleshooting this board in the past.  I toggled IOMMU to "enabled" in the bios/uefi.  After doing this, the web is consistent (for the most part) and now all the available wifi networks show on wifi also.  I tested for a bit going online and noticed the USB 3 ports don't work but USB 2.0 do (the opposite situation of my previous post).  I rebooted & toggled IOMMU to "disabled" in the uefi & the web access STILL worked, but only USB 3.0 ports are usable.  I really wish Gigabyte made another bios update for this board as that may have helped prevent some of this I'd imagine.  I'll probably just stick to PM 9 instead of 10 for now and buy a USB 3.0 hub I guess and avoid the 2.0 ports.  Thanks for your suggestions.
