upgrade from P8 to P10
« on: October 21, 2019, 11:04:04 am »
i am an amature Linux user at best.
i have been using Peppermint 8 now for two years. i had wanted to be free from the Microsoft ball and chain for years before finally pulling the trigger to go fully Linux. i absolutely love it and will not look back.

like i said, i am an amature. i do not write code, i am not into gaming or graphics. just a ordinary home user searching the web and email user.

so my question is: should i upgrade to Peppermint 10?
what are the advantages to doing so?

any thoughts or input from the Peppermint user group and or Guru's is much appreciated.

thanks much to all...

Both are supported until April 2023.
A few more features in 10 obviously, but its up to you. I haven't updated from 9-Respin on my daughters machine.
Will update to 11, which most probably will be supported all the way to 2025.

@pin

The OP asked about Peppermint EIGHT and TEN, not 9 & 10 .. so both are NOT supported until 2023.

Peppermint 7 & 8 are both supported until 2021
(based on 16.04 and supported for 5 years from the 2016)

Peppermint 9 & 10 are both supported until 2023
(based on 18.04 and supported for 5 years from the 2018)

As for the original question...

so my question is: should i upgrade to Peppermint 10?

Besides the more recent base, and the fact there MAY be a FEW newer pieces of software that require that newer base .. NO there's not really any huge benefit from moving to Peppermint 10 (specially if you already have all the working software you require) .. unless any of the new features that came with Peppermint 9, 9 respin, and 10 are any use to you.

The new features can be read about in any of these three release announcements (For Peppermint 9, 9 respin, and 10):-
https://peppermintos.com/2018/06/peppermint-9-released/
https://peppermintos.com/2018/12/peppermint-9-respin-released/
https://peppermintos.com/2019/05/peppermint-10-released/
If any of those new features and tweaks take your fancy, then sure upgrade .. if not there's no rush, just do it whenever you're ready.

Hi s2, if you're feeling adventurous, make a DATA Partition and symlink your home folders to it. That way, when you do upgrade you won't have to worry about your personal files. I was the same as you, still don't know coding, but I enjoy checking out different linux systems. I have eight distros, including Peppermint, installed in my hard drive with all of them symlinking home folders to my DATA partition.   :)
What was I thinking?
