Launch using Dedicated Graphics Card
« on: November 08, 2019, 09:51:37 am »
Hello all,

I recently switch to Peppermint and was wondering if there is a way to launch application using the dedicated graphics card.

For instance, I have Steam and Civilization game series installed and I would like to launch the game using the dedicated graphics card. When I right click, I don't see any option for it.

Does peppermint support this?

Machine Info:
Dell Latitude E6530
Graphics: NVIDIA NVS 5200M 1GB
CPU: 3rd Gen i7
MemoryL 8GB

Thank you,

You can switch between graphics adapters (intel/nvidia) in nvidia-settings, but this requires you log off and on again before the switch becomes active.

There is no way to switch on a 'per app' basis without logging off/on again.

I gather 'on demand' switching is now available in  Ubuntu 19.10 with the mate-optimus panel applet switcher, the 435 nvidia drivers, and the 5.3 kernel .. but I don't think there's any easy way to shoehorn all these into 18.04 (and hence Pep10) and have it work.

It will be coming in Pep11 though.

You can install mate-optimus if you wish
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install mate-optimusthen autostart it by running:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /etc/xdg/autostart/mate-optimus.desktopand when a blank file opens, make it read
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Comment=Launch the MATE Optimus panel applet
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

then log off/on.

You should now have a switcher in the system tray (by the clock) .. but it still requires you to log off/on between switches.
