Medion xxxx with N5000 and Peppermint six (or newwer) [solved]
« on: October 01, 2019, 08:47:08 pm »
Hi;
2nd and 3rd Problem

I DL PM six 64-Bit (cause it's fast, it have the old Chromium, and the last good lookingStartMenu with one row !!! )

Doesn't matter if i Use DVD ur USB stick - he can't start it; something with the efi - path (I guess)
That's why i wrote Medion in general, all with the N5000 , cause i have this installing problem at all of this machines

What i made: Switch off Secure boot; Search to add efi-path manuall (by i can't find a solution at this BIOS/UEFI)
No way to switch to Legacy- Mode, etc.
I wrote PM-6 on usb (not wit u-netbootin; i did it with the other, which take care to this BIOS/UEFI Staff)
I burn the DVD on win8

So - i hope, u have a solution;
the other way; as i did it now... installing PM-X, BUT

I don like the style - no way;
I want the simple "Start-Menu" - with one row (as it was till PM-6) (Or as u find in the unofficial Linux M LXDE)
(Long Time before, i read a tutorial, hwo to made it -this was 3-4 years before; no idea, where it was)

The 2nd - i duno like all the icons (sorry, they are (FOR ME) ugly); i am old fashiond; and i will be happy with the old "Icon-Theme" of PM-6
and i love this "onyx"-Style (okay, the Dark-Theme of PM-X is fine <3 )

Pls.; if you have a tutorial/link (whre itś step by step (4 noobs like me), i would love it;
cause i duno care about all this kernel; as long as i have the look and feel of PM-6

Thx !!!!

Hi LordKaan,

I will not delve into the many good reasons for not using the original Chromium or kernel from Peppermint Six, but if you really want to know them you can ask back here again, and someone will explain them to you.

As far as changing the appearance of Peppermint 10 so that it more resembles Peppermint Six, I suggest that you carefully look through the thread topics in the following forum areas:

User Submitted Tutorials

Artwork, Themes and Icons

There are many things to learn from these threads that most users (even those with little knowledge of Linux) can use. If you have a specific problem with any of the posted instructions, then simply add a new message into that specific thread and I'm certain that someone will assist you. However, it is always useful to try learning some of these things yourself so that you can become more self-sufficient with regards to your computer usage and enjoyment.  ;)

Beyond that, you can also find much information about modifying the look and feel of the various components used in Peppermint 10 by visiting the homepages of the component authors/creators (such as www.xfce.org for the components borrowed from them). Again, if you have difficulty understanding their information, or getting the results you desire, then post back here in our forum and someone with the appropriate knowledge will help guide you to a resolution of your issue.

Have fun with your experiments modifying the Linux desktop! Most of us make changes to get our own desired, "ideal" desktop -- and that is the beauty of Linux: you can change things almost endlessly to achieve something that is unique and useful for the way that you use your computer rather than the way that someone else thinks is the best way for you to use it.  8)

Hi Slim Fatz;
Again;
my "critics" shouldn't sound unpolite;
I love the work on this project from all the ppl., who understand more than me;

I am just a simple user;
finaly haveing enough from the OS, which is mostly deliverd with brand new PC,
and their way to the dark Side of OS (after  7 and 8)

Enough.

I use p.e. chrome 66 ; cause it is exact that, what a i need;
as lang, as we have Adobe Flash; and the Site, where i use it, will still run

So, i have some computers here, once installed PM 6 (Never updatet (Never change a running system ;) )
cause this sites are "save"
The same, with the old "chromium" - for me; no need to update

(even with the new Chromium some change comed, i can't agreed; or the eat "space"; telling me some plus -infos, i allready knew)

OT: Best Example was the change (LM 18.3) with the keyring, which i can switched off

So, for my (personal use) PM 6 is the best, i can get: Nice Desktop (theme) and Very, very fast (esps. at start)

-------------
So; i am kind of forums/google -noob; so ; my "search"-request will be:
"How Peppermint 10 will look like Peppermint 6"

and guess... the answers (at google) i got, are not helpfull
(even with my worse english)

So, thx for ur answer;
i ll do my best to find anything

If it's just about the menu style in Peppermint 10, then why not just swap out the whiskermenu for the older 'tier' (hierarchical) style menu .. instructions here:
https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,3705.msg40415.html#msg40415

Besides which, Peppermint 6 is no longer supported, so will not be patched for security vulnerabilities .. not to mention, Ubuntu are likely to archive the upstream repos soon.

[EDIT]

Come to think of it, I may make this a user choosable option in xfce-panel-switch in the PM10 respin.

Again : THANX a lot  !!!!!!!!

You lead me again on the right way !!!! - i will do (still bookmarked)

If you know a simple hint: Where/How i download the "old" Icon-Theme
i would be happy (so i could switch easily to the new X)
Meanwhile i use the "gnome" theme

Yep, and thx to you/others for the warning (of non support/risk) ;
For me itś good "Out of the box" - as long, as we have "flashplayer" / for my tiny machines

For the big ones; you gave me the first step (in old looking)

The Peppermint 6 Icon theme ?

IIRC, we had 'Peppermix' which was installed as part of the peppermint-artwork package for Peppermint 6, and that was set to inherit Faenza (installed via the faenza-icon-theme package).

I can write up instructions to replicate this (in PM10) if you want ?

...

[EDIT]

Come to think of it, I may make this a user choosable option in xfce-panel-switch in the PM10 respin.
I trust the translator of google; So i hope i understand u right

I am just a simple user; and for me (i duno about the work, under the desktop - all this kernel-Stuff etc.)
but for me ist the "Look and feel" (Icons, Menu (LXPanel) )
vs. Starttime (how fast the machine boot; i am direct in etc, incl. the collections of Programms)

with Peppermint 6 (after 5) the perfekt "solution".
I can install on small space (on HD's ) -p.e kind of "netbooks" (mostly the old stuff with 32 GB on board), so that "Win*ws have "space" enough

I tryed 7 (when it was released), but i had a  problem, to switch theme and/menu

Sry; i grew up with C-64/Amiga/XP; Win 7 - so i am fine with the look-like of 7, and i duno need "the modern" style

But i am one of less; old-fashioned on

So, i duno know, how monay ppl. this really "Need"

BUT; what i really apprichiate (and i am sure, ppl. like me wouldn't see it, even when it is here)
Is a simple "tutorial" -Sticky
when questions like my one - could get an easy answer: DAU look above ; it's written in big letters

I wouldn't save myself "work"; but for me it's in the moment hard, to find the old "Icon"_Theme, cause in PM 6 its named "Peppermix"; and when i remeber correct, the newwer versions have also a "PeppermintMix"-Theme - but much more colour-fuller

So, i thank u, for your thoughts, i aprichiate it; maybe a handfull users more
But, i duno wanna stop the way to the future (even with all new ideas)
I am fine, when i get helpfull links, like above

When i knew: How/Where (i get) stuff, i can download by need
But i love this slim OS so much

Correct: Peppermix ( I use it -out of the box- by "Windows" and "Symbol"_theme (Looking)
And the panel was "LXPanel 0.6.1" - but this is meanwhile solved

I would love this, if it isn to much work for you !!!!!!

Okay gimme a day or so and I'll package up the PM6 icon theme as a .deb file .. so it can be installed in later versions of Peppermint.

Then I'll link to it here.

Okay, to install the Peppermint 6 icon theme in later versions of Peppermint.
(sorry didn't do it as a .deb, but then I'm guessing very few will want this so didn't bother with the extra work ;))

Open a terminal and run these commands in sequence
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install faenza-icon-theme
then
Code: [Select]
cd /usr/share/icons
then
Code: [Select]
sudo wget https://peppermintos.info/misc/PM6-Peppermix-Icons.tar.gz
then
Code: [Select]
sudo tar xvf PM6-Peppermix-Icons.tar.gz
then
Code: [Select]
sudo rm -v PM6-Peppermix-Icons.tar.gz
now close the terminal.

Next go to:-

Menu > Settings > Customise Look and Feel > Icon Theme (tab)

and select the "PM6-Peppermix" icon theme, and click "Apply".

....

All excused,
and YOU are the hero of the day... nope, not of day... of the MONTH !!!!!!

And your step by step tutorial worked fine for me - i have it now !!!!!!
Fantastic

Meanwhile, i removed whiskey Menu , and create my "xfce4-panel 4.12.2" Menu as i should do, in your linked tutorial

I only have a small problem.... There is no switch on/off/Log out Icon/button

I made all, as it is written in the tutorial/as i understand, which i should click and add etc.
maybe u have there a last "hint" for me

THX !!!!!!! 4 your quick and helpfull support
---------------------------------------------
I made it once WITH and once without this last steps

Code: [Select]
[s]Back in the applications menu dialog, put a tick in:-

Use custom menu file

and point it at:-

File System > /etc/xdg/menus/peppermint-hierarchical.menu

Then click "Open" then close the Applications Menu dialog[/s]

It doesn't bring the "Close"-button/Dialog inside this menu; so in further versions, i wouldn't do this, cause it brings too much (off-topic) stuff inside this small keept menu

After eding / adding a other "button" (Turbo-boost Mode),  (with a couple of shot-downs/restart)
There was a "switch off" "option"-button; which i added (seperatly) This works fine for me . THX for your help !!!!!!!

And; of course to add a positiv feedback tooo

I love the new Start-Screen-Background (this grey-wall-theme // I use dual-boot-mode)) and even as Background Picture , where this theme mirror itself

This is the first time, i duno switch to a other Background JPG !!!!!, cause i love it

Looking through that menu structure, it might cause issues in Peppermint 9 and 10 .. so run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /etc/xdg/menus/peppermint-hierarchical.menu
and make the file read

There's no need to mark this topic solved .. the title doesn't really contain a question that was solved :)
