Intel 3166 wireless card and PM 6 (SOLVED)
« on: September 26, 2019, 10:22:58 pm »
Hi;
My System: Lenovo-V130-15IGM Kernel: 3.16.0-77-generic x86_64 (64 bit) with PepperMint 6
(No - i duno wanna upgrade, cause it's the last Version, i really love by Style)

My WiFi Card is a :
Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver: r8169
Edit: My mistake - ;
Intel 3166 wireless card

(see below)

The system is upgrade, and the system doesn t have a driver for this card;
so i only could use ethernet/Other WiFi-Stick

So please: Help me:
Where do i Find the driver; and how could i install it !!!!!
(pls. absolutly step-by-step instruction, cause i am a Linux Newbie; and have no idea, how to do it/use terminal etc)

Driver can't find by OS Tools (Addional drivers).

I found this (Step by Step) Instruction (Manual way) ; but i still haven't the realtek in the device list

https://unixblogger.com/how-to-get-your-realtek-rtl8111rtl8168-working-updated-guide/

Quote
username@Laptop ~ $ sudo ethtool -i enp1s0
Cannot get driver information: No such device

I made restart

-------------------------------------------
How it should look like:
Quote
Check old driver and unload it.
rmmod r8168
Build the module and install
At main.c:222:
- SSL error:02001002:system library:fopen:No such file or directory: bss_file.c:175
- SSL error:2006D080:BIO routines:BIO_new_file:no such file: bss_file.c:178
sign-file: certs/signing_key.pem: No such file or directory
Backup r8169.ko
rename r8169.ko to r8169.bak
DEPMOD 4.4.0-31-generic
load module r8168
Updating initramfs. Please wait.
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-31-generic
Completed.

And how it look like:
Quote
Check old driver and unload it.
rmmod r8168
Build the module and install
Can't read private key
DEPMOD 3.16.0-77-generic
load module r8168
Updating initramfs. Please wait.
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-77-generic
Completed.

The info on the link says:
"You can ignore the SSL error for now. The driver should be successfully compiled and installed into your system. The driver is already loaded and should work."

Okay, i ignore it

When i do
Quote
lsmod | grep r8168

i should get:
Quote

r8168                 491520  0

But i got:

Quote
r8168                 547565  0

and r816 is red

It seems - the error/my error is anywhere there

cause the instruction is axactly for this realtek card

Not sure what you mean by "device list" ?

Have you compiled/installed that r8168 driver ?

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep 816
and
Code: [Select]
lspci -vnn | grep -i net
and do you get any output from:
Code: [Select]
modinfo r8168

Nope;
cause i have no idea, what all this last commands & results mean

I knew; PM 6 is a bit "older" - in my opinion still the best (i duno like the new Style from 7 and abvoe, and i am to noobish, the recreate it back)
PM6 works on most of my machines fine ; and its quick at start and have all what i need; even with no updates (i knew, security)

I knew, 2 realtek cards (it seems this one), and a other one (Elder) are not recogniced automaticly; and/or makeś problems while running)

This Laptop (Pentium N5000) use standards-Components (I run 10-12 of this machines)
and i would run now PM 6 on it (Tricky to install by some of the newer bios/UEFI cause of 64 Bit

So, i am just user; and PM6 lead me since years very well (before 5)

So, this is now my first try, to install a "Driver" by myself... and i have no idea, where the problem could be

On Linux (lubuntu and Linux Mint LXDE (actual Versions, and versionś before) it install all automaticly

PM6 is (sometimes) better, cause i could use (install) it mostly without any problems:
Stick in - install - let's go

Is your problem with WIRED or WIRELESS ?

With the Wireless  - he didn find the driver for the realtek RTL811
He doesn show it to me; only with inxi
Even after installing the driver by hand

Code: [Select]
inxi -Nn
Network:   Card-1: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver: r8168
IF: eth0 state: down mac: 48:2a:e3:09:5f:a3
           Card-2: Intel Device 3166
           IF: N/A state: N/A speed: N/A duplex: N/A mac: N/A
           Card-3: Ralink RT2070 Wireless Adapter driver: rt2800usb
IF: wlan0 state: up mac: c8:3a:35:c1:5d:b5

And to be online now, i usw a usb Stick (WiFi) or ethernet (wired); depends, where i am sitting

Okay so the problem isn't with the Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 (as in the topic title) because that's the wired ethernet adapter. The problem is the Intel 3166 wireless card which should be using the iwlwifi drivers.

Can you please post the output from:
Code: [Select]
modinfo iwlwifi | grep 3166; uname -a
and
Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep iwl

[EDIT]

I'm putting this link here for my future reference
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2311656&p=13431451#post13431451
but please provide the output to the commands above before doing anything else.

Hi LordKaan,

Actually it is you, the original poster and creator of this thread, who has access to the Modify button (in the first message you wrote) and can change the topic name. Of course, a forum Moderator can also do this, but it is only common courtesy for you to do it and not expect forum Moderators to take their time from helping others to do this for you.  ;)
