Bluetooth Dongle Not Working
« on: September 12, 2019, 06:38:34 pm »
Greetings,

I bought an inexpensive bluetooth dongle on eBay and haven't been able to get it to work. I'm trying to connect a Dell F300K bluetooth mouse. I've sifted through the forums and online and haven't been able to find a solution. Here is some additional data:

Are you putting the mouse into discovery mode ?
https://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukbsdt1/sln155386/guide-for-pairing-and-troubleshooting-dell-bluetooth-keyboards-and-mouse?lang=en

with the mouse in discovery mode, open

Menu > Settings > Bluetooth Manager

and click the "Search" button.

Was anything discovered ?

Hi and thanks for replying.

The bluetooth dongle is not being recognized. When I go to Menu > Settings > Bluetooth Manager, Blueman-manager opens but everything is grayed out. There is no bluetooth icon in the notification area. At one point, when the icon was there, I attempted to add a device, but a popup told me I had no adapter even though the USB dongle is plugged in and the power indicator is on.

Do you get any output from
Code: [Select]
hciconfig
and
Code: [Select]
hciconfig -a hci0
and
Code: [Select]
hcitool scan

Just wondering if it needs the edits listed for the Belkin adapter

Can you post the output from
Code: [Select]

and
Code: [Select]

[EDIT]

Can you also post the output from:
Code: [Select]
dpkg -l | grep linux-image

If I may interject...

I've been running my PM9 daily driver on top of Linux 4.15.0-23 (not a typo) for quite a while - 54d 8h uptime, as I type.

It's rock solid!

Just saying. Carry on...  ;)

Hi VinDSL,

If we can't figure this out, maybe I'll try that. Thanks ;)

Do you get offered the GRUB boot menu at system bootup (ie. just after the BIOS POST screen) ?

If not, does the GRUB menu appear if you hit the Shift key immediately after the BIOS POST screen ?

Once at the GRUB menu, scroll down and select "Advanced", then hit enter.

Now scroll to the linux-image-4.15.0-23-generic boot option, and hit enter to boot it.

Does that kernel ?

Yes, I was able to boot kernel: linux-image-4.15.0-23-generic. I was also able to get the blueman applet to launch into the notification area. However, I still can't add the adapter and when I try to add the mouse as a device it still tells me I have no adapter.

I'm still booted into that kernel version and will stay there until you tell me to do otherwise.

I wonder if the btusb driver needs the same 'reset' option the old hci_usb one did...

What happens if you run:
Code: [Select]
sudo rmmod btusb
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe btusb reset=1

Note to self .. this might be a simple race condition (between ath9k and btusb), see here
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2404731&page=2
for something to check next.

[EDIT]

It might also be that the ath9k wireless driver needs the btcoex_enable option enabled.

Running those commands makes the blueman-applet disappear from the notification area. Then when I try to run bluetooth manager from the setting menu, the blueman-applet won't come back up in the notification area.

I even tried rebooting back into kernel linux-image-4.15.0-23-generic, running the commands again and opening bluetooth manager just in case my machine having been in suspend changed something, but the results were the same.

Okay let's try something.

run:
Code: [Select]
gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/btusb.conf
and when a blank file opens, make it read
Code: [Select]
options btusb reset=1
SAVE the file and exit the text editor.

Now REBOOT.   <--IMPORTANT

Once rebooted, does BT work ?

If not, does it work after running
Code: [Select]
 sudo service bluetooth restart

I edited and saved the btusb.conf file as you instructed, and rebooted into the linux-image-4.15.0-23-generic kernel. The blueman-applet did not come up in the notification area until I ran Bluetooth Manager from Menu > Settings and enabled bluetooth. However, it still did not detect an adapter and will not allow me setup a new device.

So I ran 'sudo service bluetooth restart' as per your instructions. The blueman-applet continued to run after the bluetooth service restart, but I had to turn bluetooth on at the top of the menu in the applet. However, when I did the results were the same. No adapter detected, and will not allow me to setup a new device due to no adapter being detected.
