I etched the Peppermint 10 .iso image to a flash drive, and when I was done i reformatted the drive in order to wipe it clean. Nevertheless, the are 3 folders and 2 files that I cannot delete/wipe. I don't know how to attach an image, so here is a list.

Folders:
.disk
boot
EFI

Files:
README.diskdefines
TRANS.TBL

Permission was denied, so I changed ownership this way:
* mount the drive on /media/flash, then
*
Code: [Select]
sudo chown $USER:$USER /media/flash

After this, right clicking on the files and folders shows under the Permissions tab all is greyed out. Trying to erase with
Code: [Select]
srm -vz -R /path/to/filename
still tells me "permission denied".
Please advise.

Why not simply use the USB Stick Formatter tool in the main menu to format the USB stick ?

Menu > System > USB Stick Formatter

I did that, but to no avail. I also tried balenaEtcher: same result.

Well you likely have a physical problem with that USB stick then.

First thing I'd try would be to install gparted and try using that to write a new msdos style partition  table to the drive .. at the very least gparted should tell you where things are failing.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I created that msdos table, which seems to have wiped everything off.
Then, I did
Code: [Select]
sudo mount /dev/sdb /media/flash
and this was the output:
Quote
mount: /media/flash: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.
Presumably this means the USB stick is buggered, so to speak?

You need to create a partition with a file system first, then mount that.

Yeah as murraymint suggests, go back into gparted and create a single FAT32 partition using all available space.

I created 1 Fat32 partition that supposedly takes up the full flash drive. Nevertheless, it says 14.6 MB, yes MB, used.
When the flash drive is mounted and I look at it in Thunar, nothing is shown, but when I right-click to unmount it, the 3 folders and 2 files are shown again. What's more,right-clicking shows 14.7 GB = 49% is used !!

So, @PCNetSpec, something is not quite right, and in fact the USB stick is good for the garbage can, right?

If those directories keep reappearing I'd say YES it looks like the USB stick cannot be formatted and is a bin job.
