Pep 10 hangs on every other boot
« on: August 24, 2019, 12:19:46 pm »
I'm not sure if this is considered a software or a hardware problem, and since I am fairly new I have posted here.

My Peppermint 10 installation seemed to work OK until a recent update, except for the video. I had to put the line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d"
in /etc/default/grub to get it to boot quickly.

Now it just gets to a point where I see a backlight on the screen but it won't continue to boot. I have to hold the power button down to turn it off. On the next boot the Grub menu comes up. When I start a normal boot from there I see a few messages on the screen about USB ports but it boots OK. Next boot it hangs up again, and the cycle repeats. It works every other boot after the Grub menu comes up.

I don't know what to look for in the logs that might help figure out why it hangs on boot. I would appreciate any clues.

Thanks

Hi MrGizmo, sorry to hear you are having problems. The fellows here are going to need to know a little bit about your system, so could you post the output from the following command?
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
I'm sure someone will be able to help after seeing that information.
What was I thinking?

Hi MrGizmo,

Another thing to try when it hangs with the black screen is to press these 3-keys in combination:

Code: [Select]
Ctrl + Alt + F4
and see if this gets you to a non-graphic login prompt. If it does, then you can continue to login and snoop around a little. For example, you might then enter this:

Code: [Select]
dmesg > myDmesg.txt

which will generate a text file (myDmesg.txt) in your home directory that has some perhaps helpful information for us. Then post a link to the file here on the forum (or post the contents here but make sure to enclose the output in Sp (Spoiler) tags (using the button above the forum text entry box that is labelled Sp) because the output is rather long and use of the Sp tag makes everything tidier)

When you then wish to shut down the computer enter

Code: [Select]
poweroff
or

Code: [Select]
sudo poweroff
rather than using the somewhat dangerous method of simply holding down the power button until the shutdown occurs.  ;)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll get that data as soon as I can.

As an update, I want to let everyone know that I installed Xubuntu 16.04 (64 bit) on the computer and had no problems with video or booting. Then I updated it to Xubuntu 18.04 and had to use video=SVIDEO-1:d again, but the computer still boots up every time after that change.

From what I have seen and understand, it could be your laptop hardware won't support the newer kernel. Try booting into an earlier kernel, maybe the 4.18 and if that doesn't work, the 4.15.   :-\

Sounds right. I had to deliver that laptop to a client, so I'll try that if I see the problem again.
