Strange, but true.. Pentium 4 vs Core 2 Quad
« on: August 19, 2019, 07:08:21 am »
I've been running Peppermint 8, 32 bit (my fave distro) for a couple of years without a single problem. It's installed on an old Pentium 4 with 4Gb ram. Don't be fooled by the old hardware: My Pep 8 runs like lightning. A couple of days ago, I decided to treat myself to a new install of Peppermint 10 64 bit, on a not so old, HP Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400, also with 4Gb ram.

According to 'cpubenchmark', the Q9400 is around 9x faster than the Pentium (3340 vs 373.)

To my amazement, my old Pep 8 32 bit on the old Pentium, runs faster than the Q9400. I made sure to disable all the visual effects, too, etc. It's still noticeably less responsive and zippy than Pep 8. On Pep 8 the mouse cursor is faster, programs open quicker, the whole thing feels faster & lighter.

So, I'm back on Pep 8... until it's no longer supported :(

Whilst interesting it doesn't really tell us what the problem is/was. Sure PM8 should be a small amount lighter (on the same hardware) but not by much.

I didn't say there was a problem, whatsoever.

You implied it by saying you switched back to Peppermint 8 which was without problems.
