Selecting wifi-dongle over netbook wifi hardware?
« on: August 16, 2019, 04:07:34 am »
Hi, running Peppermint9 on a very happy Samsung N110 and it's working excellent, boot time from off to on internet is 90 seconds. :) (has SSD)

I thought I'd try a much newer TP-Link USB wifi-dongle to see if the internet connectivity would be improved over the standard card in the N110. (which is 'Wireless: Broadcom 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR' from 2009!?)

I've looked at the 'connection information' and the hardware address for the wifi remains the same so questions is...

how do I change what wifi hardware the netbook uses to see if the TP-Link dongle is quicker?

I hunted around and got to this..
whitestar@whitestar-NC10-N110 ~ $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0ac8:c326 Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. Namuga 1.3M Webcam
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 2357:0109
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0a5c:2151 Broadcom Corp. Bluetooth
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

when i remove the dongle...
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 2357:0109
disappears so that must be it... but where next?

Many thanks for any help! 8)

Isn't it selectable in networkmanager ?

Also isn't there a physical switch or key combo to turn off the inbuilt wifi adapter ?

Maybe F9 according to this
