Pictureviewer freezes Peppermint
« on: August 15, 2019, 09:01:57 am »
Fresh install of Peppermint 10 (DELL VOSTRO 1700) 32 bit minimal (tried 64 - its slower than Vista).
Had it running - tried changing the display driver, to the one recommended by the manufacturer, as I figured the below problem could be connected - Peppermint never recovered from that one.
So redoing 4 days work, in getting thing working like I want them to.
(Still miss Wine and GW tho - don't think that'll be a problem.)

Reading pictures from another PC on local net, "Imageviewer" (Billedfremviser in danish) apparently never finishes reading the picture, but freezes the PC, so the only way out is to cut the power.
Firefox sometimes show the picture, but sometimes ends up showing the "broken image" symbol, tho the picture is visible while being read...

Any solution to this?
And no, it's not my files, that are damaged. No problems on camera, phones or 3 Win7 PCs or the Vista (NAS) where they are located.
A recommended replacement for the  build in "Imageviewer"?

Try either Pix
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install pix
or maybe nomacs
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install nomacs
and please let us know how you get on, because we're considering switching default image viewer.

nomacs was the choise then.. ;)

pix does not function with LAN.
Breaks OS - all running apps are closed, user logged out. Waiting long enough, gives login screen.
Don't know if it's only LAN - have no images on this yet to test with.

Tested eog (Eye of Gnome) also.
Slower than nomacs and less options.

Would have liked to have one with an option to show all images in a folder as thumbnails.
Have an old Win95 (maybe 98?) thing called ACDSee32, that is still functioning in Win7 - best I have ever seen yet, tho many have tried to copy it.
Couldn't find one, tho, and nomacs will do for now.

That's strange Pix works perfectly, on my LAN,

If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs then you're not quite grasping the situation

Well - can't really tell you anything other than what I experience...

I have another (very) oldie (Dell Inspiron 6000), that I for the fun of it, installed the same Peppermint on.
And Pix does fetch pictures from LAN on that one - but only up to a certain size.
It does fetch them (the bar lower right), but doesn't show anything, if they are large images.

The problem on this may be that it is actually a 64bit machine, but the OS is 32bit.
I don't know. (Figured that was the reason for the breakdown with NVIDIA display driver).
Maybe it can confuse pix as well - maybe in combination with reading from net.

I can do some more tests, if it will help you.

There are proprietary options...

XnView MP:-
https://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/#downloads

or maybe (if you don't mind snaps), there's IrfanView in the snapstore:-
https://snapcraft.io/irfanview
this can be installed with
Code: [Select]
sudo snap install irfanview
but I can't say how well it'll work .. I don't use snaps.
