MEGAsync for Linux - Signature Expiry Dust-Up - 30 JUL 2019
« on: August 05, 2019, 06:40:10 pm »
Here's an interesting one, for Peppermint Mega users...

Quote from: Mega for Business
This blog post is only relevant to Linux users who had MEGAsync installed prior to August 1st.

SOURCE: https://mega.nz/blog_55

I noticed that my Megasync pubkey disappeared today, when I was trying to do an incremental Peppermint 9 update.  :-\

Personally, I prefer to update Megasync via Synaptic, using Mega's repo: https://mega.nz/linux/MEGAsync/

I've been running ver 18.04 for awhile now: https://mega.nz/linux/MEGAsync/xUbuntu_18.04/

Since I had to reinstall the pubkey, anyway, I decided to upgrade => ver 18.10: https://mega.nz/linux/MEGAsync/xUbuntu_18.10/

Here's the code I used in CLI to reinstall the pubkey, so I could do the upgrade:

Code: [Select]
╭─vindsl@Boogaloo-6 ~
╰─$ wget -q -O - https://mega.nz/linux/MEGAsync/xUbuntu_18.10/Release.key | sudo apt-key add -

Once the new pubkey was reinstalled, I updated the source in Synaptic (a pic is worth 1000 words):

I reloaded the package info in Synaptic, did a Smart Upgrade, and bada bing, bada boom  8)

It wasn't until I was done installing, and testing, the new ver that I ran across Mega's blog post. Reading through it, I guess it would work, but... I'm a lazy, oldskool, Synaptic/mintUpdate kinda guy - you know?

So, if you installed Megasync prior to August 1st, 2019, and your pubkey just disappeared, take your pick...

Seems a common thing for some devs not to keep their key updated and in sync with their software :)

Now I've said that, you can bet I'll forget at some point too :))

I'm having to individually reinstall the pubkey on all of my machines, as I do weekly updates.

Here's the latest - my 32bit P9 powered Dell Dimension 3000 doorstop:

I must say; the Megasync gui is looking much nicer, these days, on all of my Peppermint installs.

I wonder if Graeme got the Mega gui problems ironed out on his machine(s).

I got back into town and decided to update my machines, today.

Surprisingly, this 32bit doorstop had updates waiting for both Dropbox and Megasync.

The Dropbox update was unremarkable, but Megasync balked at an unmet depend (libpng12-0).

In order to shoehorn libpng12-0 into Peppermint, follow these links:

64bit deb download

Code: [Select]
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/amd64/libpng12-0/download32bit deb download

Code: [Select]
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/i386/libpng12-0/downloadI also purged Linux 4.15.x and installed Linux 5.2.x. It's working great, but that's fodder for another discussion  8)

Man, this thing is flying!

12 sec boot, too  :o

Not bad for a 15+ year-old, 32bit PCI bus architecture, Dell doorstop, eh what?

Right  8)

I'm not sloughing off. It's just 'real life' getting in the way.  I'll just say it like it is....

I'm involved in a lot of time-sensitive legal matters that involve 100's of ppl, millions of dollars, and require perfect timing and many hours of meetings, collaboration, and travel. Believe me when I say, I would love nothing more than to surround myself with the machines I've collected and OS I love, and haxor away 16 hours a day; but that isn't in the cards, at the moment.

This too shall pass. Hang in there bro. That's what I'm doing...   ;)

Ahem, that said...

BTW, the 'cowboy' kernel (I mentioned above) is working so well, I decided to install it on my 32bit P10-powered Asus Eee PC this morning. Actually, I went the extra mile and installed the linux-hwe-edge enablement stack; and, it worked a treat. That's what I'm using, as I type.
