How do I install firefox developer .tar.bz2?
« on: July 02, 2019, 02:38:51 pm »
Generally speaking, these kind of packages includes an installation and config file. But I can't wrap my head how to install this one:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/developer/

I extracted it with the archive manager, and then, opened the terminal within the root extracted file directory. HOwever, I don't know how to compile and install it, the most I did was to run it by ./firefox.

There is no installation other than extracting the files. You can move the extracted firefox folder and run it from wherever you like. If you want it to show up in your menu just edit the menu and add a custom launcher to the firefox binary you ran.

or you can install the ppa from firefox

https://launchpad.net/~mozillateam/+archive/ubuntu/firefox-next

Not sure if Developer or Just beta.   This way it will be auto updated when the next Firefox build comes along.

PPA - your risk tho. Beta's not always guaranteed to work correctly all the time.

I'm not sure that's needed with dev. I ran it myself and it's automatically set to auto update. As long as it's in a location with permissions, it seems like it should work without a PPA.

I ended up moving into a folder and created a desktop's launcher for it. Thanks for the suggestions.  ;D

Btw, how could I make a Menu's icon for it and put it into any of the displayed categories?.

Search for "Menu Editor" in the menu or right-click on the menu icon and select "Edit Applications." Click on the Internet category on the left and then click on the plus symbol to add a new item. Give the new item a name and for the command point it to the Firefox binary you downloaded. I also added the "WebBrowser" category. I didn't see an icon in the extracted files so just download this svg file and put it in the same folder as the binary. Then choose that as the icon and save the configuration. Boomsauce.

Cool, GUI instructions .. I'm set in my old way of manually creating the .desktop file and placing it in either.

/usr/share/applications (for system wide)
or
~/.local/share/applications (for user specific)

so kinda forget there are other methods available .. I guess it's a throwback to our LXDE days when we HAD to do it manually :)
