Broken USB Port 3.0
« on: July 02, 2019, 07:54:34 am »
Hello Peppermint.

Yesterday the 3.0 port on my 5 year old Toshiba Satellite died.  Since I do use every port on this laptop computer (It looks much like this), I'm now gathering ideas as to how address this issue.

Any suggestions as for how to add another port on this aging desktop replacement computer?  I don't want to bring it to a local computer repair shop if I don't absolutely have to.

Thank you,

perknh

Which model of Satellite ?

Has it got a PCMCIA Express slot ?

If not, I'm sure the Chinese will sell you a USB 2.0 --> USB 3.0 adapter :))

Thanks, PCNetSpec.  Heck if I know.  But if a picture is worth a thousand words, here is what it looks like.  But you got to click onto the picture 6 times to see what I'm looking at here.  Sorry. :-[

Good one!!  I'll only believe it if and when I see a blue piece of plastic inside!  ;D

Off topic:

Installed Peppermint 10 onto an HP Stream tonight.  Firefox's default search engine was Google.  I didn't see Peppermint DDG anywhere.  I added it though through perknhs-personal-startpage.  Thought you should know.  Might be a one-off install, who knows?  Chromium, incidentally, has no such issue.

Now that you mention it, I did an install today with the same result.

Okay I'm gonna need to look into that then .. thanks for the heads up.

[EDIT]

Sorry perknh, that doesn't have an expresscard slot, so I can't think of any way of easily adding USB 3

That's okay, I don't need a USB 3.  All I need is another USB port. Is there something I can buy to insert into the one working USB 2 port I have on that side of the computer that would give me two working USB 2 ports -- something like what you can do from a wall jack in your house?  See I normally use a mouse and a fan on that side of the computer, and now I have no working fan.  I don't care if something hangs out of the side of the computer because this computer never travels anywhere anyhow.

Yes, it's called a USB hub. You usually get at least four ports by plugging it into one.

Yes that is an unpowered USB hub, but they don't have to look that horrible pernkh.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/7-Port-Aluminum-USB-3-0-Hub-5V-2A-Power-Adapter-for-PC-Laptop-Notebook-Desktop/132225990464
there are thousands to choose from. (just search amazon/ebay for "usb 3.0 hub" or similar).

But depending on what you are planning on connecting to it, you may or may not  want a powered hub. (?)

Question .. is the USB port that's left USB 2 or USB 3 ?

Ahh, but mine looks like it's made for Apple users, so obviously it's worth more right ? :P

(but you do also get the 2A power brick in case you wanna add anything that draws more power than the USB port can supply)
