Startup Speed
« on: June 22, 2019, 08:03:18 pm »
Hi all,

Is there a way to speed up startup a little? I'm sure any changes might be meager, but even a little bit of additional boot time speed would be nice. I'm on Peppermint 10.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Not sure what all you might need to know to help.

Thanks.

-Joe

If you're running a HDD, switch to a SDD. That will boost anything that accesses the drive, including the startup speed.

I'm sure there are other suggestions, but that's one that immediately comes to mind for me.

First off, (unless you're using it, which you're probably not if you did a standard install), uninstall btrfs-tools
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get remove btrfs-tools
beyond that we'd need the output from a few commands .. such as
Code: [Select]
inxi -Fz
and
Code: [Select]
systemd-analyze blame
and
Code: [Select]
systemd-analyze critical-chain
and it might also help if you run:
Code: [Select]
dmesg > ~/Desktop/dmesg.txt
you'll then find a file on your desktop called dmesg.txt .. can you host that somewhere such as
http://www.tinyupload.com/
and provide a link to it

Hi scifidude79. Thanks for the response. It's a laptop, pre-SSD. Good recommendation though. I would have certainly considered it were I capable of doing so.

Hi joeP12, welcome to Peppermint. How long is your computer taking to boot up? If you're booting at about a minute, that's pretty normal. You can probably get rid of apparmor to help a little. Good luck.
What was I thinking?

If you're not the paranoid type you could remove apparmor, and if you don't plan on serving files to Windows computers you could also uninstall samba (for a small saving).

But the main problem seems to be your hard drive being very slow

which I doubt there's much we can do about (certainly not without the dmesg output).

An SSD would make a world of difference.

Hi JoeP12,

for any further posts that long, if you use the Sp icon (Spoiler), it leaves them like the two posts above and only if you click on them do they fully open.

Just Makes it look tidier  :)

Posting it here in two sections is a pain because it's hard to search .. any reason you didn't just host the file on tinyupload.com and provide a link like I asked ?

There seems to be a large (14 second) delay in the hardware initialisation here:

Are you even using the wired ethernet card ?

I didn't realize that was an option. Thanks and I'll remember that in case I post a long blurb in the future! :)

Sorry, I must have missed the request to post it elsewhere. Sorry about that. No, I'm not using wired ethernet.

is it possible to disable both the webcam and ethernet adapter (maybe in the BIOS) and see if that speeds things up ?

Another option may be to swap out network-manager for wicd, but only if you don't have any (let's call them) advanced network configurations.

Also if you don't use IPv6, maybe disabling it might help.
