Wifi with Fujitsu Siemens Amilo 1720 [SOLVED]
« on: August 17, 2014, 05:31:35 pm »
Hello there,

I recently discovered Peppermint OS and found it would be a great option for my old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 1720 laptop. I went through the install without any problem, but am now struggling to get the wifi to work. I installed WiFi Radar and can see my networks, so it seems that I'm getting close, but still I can't connect... Can anyone help me to sort this out?

Thank you in advance!

Hi bidule, welcome to the Peppermint forums  ;).  As this is a new installation, have you run an update and upgrade?  If not, please open a terminal window with the following keystrokes: Ctrl+Alt+t.  Enter the following commands.

Tip: To reduce typographical errors, use the, Code: [Select] function below to highlight the command.  Click on the center mouse button while in the terminal to paste.

Code: [Select]
apt update && apt upgrade -y
Hit enter and enter your password if asked, (you will not see your password being entered).  Hit enter again.  Test your connection.

Could you provide a little more information about your machine.  Enter the following commands into the terminal window.
Code: [Select]
inxi -F
Post the output encapsulated using the, "spoiler" function Sp that is found above the crying   :'( emoticon.  Next, enter into the terminal window:
Code: [Select]
lspci
Hit enter and as the output can be rather long.  Post that also using the, "spoiler".  Many thanks and good luck  ;)!!

Edit: Its good to see another Fujitsu Siemens user here.  I'm using an AMILO Li 3710.  It works beautifully with Peppermint.  A real sweetheart of a laptop  ;D!

Can you post the output from:
Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep acer

Can you also try running these commands in sequence:
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r acer-wmi
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe -r ath5k
then
Code: [Select]
sudo modprobe at5k
then
Code: [Select]
sudo rfkill unblock all
did wireless spring to life ? .. ie. are you now able to make a connection to your router in the normal way ?

Be aware if that works, it will NOT survive a reboot .. but if it works, we can  make it permanent.

Then I left-clicked on the network icon in the task bar and I noticed that all three wifi networks were shown, which is a major progress! Unfortunately, I still cannot connect: when I select any of the listed networks, the network icon turns to a busy state for a while (saying "Configuring Wi-Fi network connection '...'), then a message box pops up saying "Disconnected - you are now offline". So it's getting better, but we're apparently not there yet...

OK, let's do this properly
run:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and add a single NEW line at the bottom that reads:-

blacklist acer-wmi

SAVE the file and REBOOT

Once rebooted, right-click on the networkmanager icon in the system tray (by clock) and select "Edit Connections" .. now delete any wireless connections that are already there.

Now left-click on the networkmanager icon and select your network and attempt to connect .. if it prompts for your password for authentication, enter your Peppermint password, then it should ask for the wireless key.

Excellent, it worked and the connection even survived the next reboot.

Thanks a lot
