Pulled the Trigger
« on: June 14, 2019, 06:32:45 pm »
I pulled the trigger on a refurbished laptop on Ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Latitude-E6320-Laptop-Intel-Core-i5-2-5GHz-8GB-Ram-500GB-HDD-Windows-10-Pro/153469235436

It looks like a great system, I know a lot of people on here love Latitude laptops. I figure $125.99 shipped is as good as it gets for that much computer in a small form factor. I will, of course, be putting Peppermint 10 on it. I may leave Windows 10 Pro on there, since it's not the Home version, but the jury is out on that one. But, it's definitely getting Peppermint. I don't know if that i5 is a dual or quad core, but it will fly with Peppermint either way. I have a computer with a 2009 dual core Celeron at 2.5 GHz and that thing flies with Peppermint.

Anyway, I'm excited about this. :D

Sweet, I can dig it. Either way, it's an i5 so it's got to have nice specs. It should be great for most tasks I'd use a laptop for.

I know you're one who sings the praises of the E series, that's why I went ahead and pulled the trigger.  8)

Good choice!  I got one of those for my Uncle.  Runs Peppermint like a dream and is super fast.  I recently upgraded to a E7440 i7.  It is a little overkill but hey...I'm worth it!

That's great to know. Just looking at the specs, it looks a lot like an old Celeron dual core that I have that runs Peppermint great, but of course it's a much newer system with an i5, more RAM and better GPU. :)

It's always good when you can treat yourself to a nice upgrade. An i7 may seem like overkill, but someday you may need that power. :)

Financial year ends in June in Australia so a friend needed to throw out his dated hardware in order to upgrade to tax deductible new stuff. His laptop was a Dell E6330 with a 250G HDD and 8GB RAM......immaculate condition cos Charlies a farmer and 'never uses computers'

I took the Peppermint SSD out of my old Acer and slipped it into the new Latitude......Win10 was on the old HDD!

Your going to have fun with your 'new' Dell ;D

I'm a serious admirer of this purchase, scifidude79.  A Dell, 8 gigs, and small form? :o

Yeah, you scored big time with this one! :)

Maybe later. I'm not in a hurry to clone the Windows install to another drive.

Did you know you can download the original installation disk for these things directly from Dell ?
(just in case you wanna Dell Win7 Recovery disk)

If it came with Windows
https://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukdhs1/drivers/osiso/wt64a

If it came with Linux
https://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/ukdhs1/Drivers/OSISO

Really you can go to either of those, enter your service tag, and it'll give you a link to the ISO of the OS it came with .. even if you visit the wrong one.

Service tag can be found in the BIOS

I can probably also make a recovery disc on the laptop.

While a good suggestion, downloading it from Dell wouldn't work because this model originally had Windows 7, but the refurbisher put Windows 10 Pro on it. I can only get a Win7 recovery image from Dell.

True, but now Win10 has been installed you can now extract the key with something like Belarc Advisor or Produkey
https://www.lifewire.com/free-product-key-finder-programs-2625119

then you can download Win10 directly from Microsoft and install it legitimately
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

Or you can still install Win7 with the Dell recovery image if you prefer .. once Win10 has been installed as a free upgrade once so it's registered on their servers (and you've extracted and written down the key), you can swap back and forth between them if you want.

Extracting the Win10 key should really be the first thing you do when you get it .. then you'll always be able to reinstall Win10 should you ever want/need to by just downloading the Win10 ISO directly from Microsoft.

Now you can install/reinstall Win7 / Win10 / Linux at will.

The generic keys for Win 10 from a free upgrade are (AFAIK) always

Windows 10 Home: YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7

Windows 10 Pro: VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

Just in case you forget to extract your key (which is likely one of the above anyway) .. but these will only work if your system ALREADY had the free upgrade installed at least once.

And you can only install the version your free upgrade moved you to, so if your free upgrade was to Win 10 Pro .. you can only reinstall Pro (using the key above).

Though I'm guessing I didn't just tell you anything you didn't already know :)
