Devnet Shevnet (SOLVED)
« on: June 13, 2019, 01:20:50 am »
Hi guys

As I already mentioned on here I've installed PM10 on a friends laptop, I've already done this for him on his PC and he loves it, he wants away from Windows and I really want this to work for him but I'm having endless issues, he has some specialist software which I set up a Windows VM for and I had to help with that on another thread, this time my problem is with email, he has a devnet-uk domain and I cannot get it to send emails with Thunderbird, the frustrating thing here is he has it working in Thunderbird on a mac and it sends and receives ok, I've copied his settings exactly and tried every other possible combination on the smtp server settings and I keep getting the same error each time

Quote
Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because connecting to the Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.devnet-uk.net
failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your
Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again

So as I'm unfamiliar with domain name email as well as devnet-uk is there anything I could be overlooking I can't think of any logical reason why it would work on his mac and not on the laptop, I've been at this for days now and I've run out of ideas

The fact it works on his mac suggests to me I have some setting wrong but god knows I've tried everything I can think of but there's obviously something I haven't thought of so would it be possible to locate the .thunderbird folder in his mac and copy it to the home folder on the PM10 laptop I'm working on or is that a stupid idea

Graeme

Theoretically that should be possible .. give it a go.
(just the config/mail directory .. obviously not the executable)

I can see no reason Thunderbird should work on the Mac but not on Linux .. it must be a setting somewhere.

[EDIT]

mail.devnet-uk.net is definitely pingable .. are you sure you're using the right port ?
(and does it require a login?)

Because of your other topic about the banking page .. do you get any return from
Code: [Select]
ping -c 5 mail.devnet-uk.net
?

In the interests of closure, Devnet (which appears to be one guy running his own email server) was either unable or unwilling to fix this problem which was clearly at his end and the problem was finally solved by moving over to another hosting service

Thanks for the help

Cool .. always a solution, even if sometimes it calls for drastic action :)

Is the guy now happy with his Linux experience .. which is the important thing ?

He loves Linux/Peppermint and he want's to do everything on it, but to be honest that's not gonna be entirely possible due to some of the specialised software he uses.

here's just one example
Due to HMRC switching to paying VAT digitally online  (MTD) he can't use his current accounting package (Quickbooks 2010) to do that so his accountant want's to switch him over to VT Transactions which has a facility for MTD but there's a few problems with that

(1) he would have to learn a new system
(2) He would have to transfer all his accounts over to VT manually
(3) VT won't run in Linux (I've tried everything it just won't work)

But I have a solution there's a web based MTD service called One Click (HMRC) Approved he could use to pay VAT and continue using QB2010 just as he's doing now and he can do it all in Linux providing I can get QB2010 running in WINE and if not I know I can get QB2003 running in WINE and he'd be happy to use that, so that's where I am just now.

But this has been a battle from the beginning and I seem to be endlessly running into brick walls, I've been at this for weeks now and I'm way out my depth here but I'm not gonna give up because he genuinely want's to use Peppermint and I want to do all I can to help him.

The ironic thing here is I gave up advocating Linux a long time ago, I learned it's pointless unless they genuinely want it and are prepared to learn & listen which very few people are otherwise it's an exercise in frustration so I don't do it, but this guy doesn't only want it he's genuinely enthusiastic about it so I'll keep slogging away and do all I can

Thanks for your help so far

Graeme
