I think that PCNetSpec is still here, just not at the moment. If you are feeling adventurous you can try the following, otherwise wait for PCNetSpec.

To try that guy's solution do this: Open a terminal by pressing the following three keys together:
Code: [Select]
Ctrl + Alt + t

Enter the following command in the terminal window, but to reduce typing errors, click on the word Select in Code: [Select] to highlight the text.  Then center-click with your mouse (i.e. click with the mouse wheel) while in the terminal to paste the copied contents. Finally, press the ENTER key:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/modules
Enter your password as requested and press the ENTER key again.
In the file that opens, add a line at the very bottom that says:
Code: [Select]
apm power_off=1
Then save the file and close the editor.
Back in the terminal window type:
Code: [Select]
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Enter your password as requested and press the ENTER key again.

In the file that opens, find the line that looks like this
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
and change it to this:
Code: [Select]
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force apm=power_off"
Save the file and close the editor. In the terminal session enter this:
Code: [Select]
sudo update-grub
Press the ENTER key again and wait until the updating has finished. Then close the terminal and try shutting down the computer to see if this works.

But I repeat: do this at your own risk -- otherwise wait for PCNetSpec.  ;)

Thanks, Slim

I followed all of your suggestions (correctly, I hope) and got the following output after the last instruction:
Code: [Select]
tony@tony-Aspire-V3-111P ~ $ sudo update-grub
Generating grub configuration file ...
Warning: Setting GRUB_TIMEOUT to a non-zero value when GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT is set is no longer supported.

Does this shed any more light on the problem?

Thank you for that, Robert, but I'm too far outside my comfort zone to try this.

Sorry (but thanks again)

I'm not too bothered about that........provided I'm not left with a doorstop  :)

Hi, TonyB:

Feeling adventuresome, hey?  ;D

I don't think there is anything more ridiculous than people who don't require Windoze for professional reasons, but still are afraid of deleting it (by accident, or intentionally) and replacing it with something as great as Peppermint (or just about any Linux distro, for that matter). Especially after trying it as a live CD/DVD/USB and seeing that it works.  ::)

Don't worry about that grub message that you observed. It is not relevant to either your problem or the changes that you made.

So ... did your machine power-down? Or did it still hang?

No. Nothing's changed. It's still not working as it should.

To be absolutely clear...
    - when I go to shut down, I get the screen with the Peppermint symbol & the word "peppermint"
    - the next line it says "Shutting Down..."
    - and on the next line there's a  sort of horizontal thermometer which has a tiny red progress report which never fills up
And there it hangs.
For over 2 hours.

The only way out I've found is Power Off

His problem is related to the win8 drive partitioning, I would be willing to bet if he does not care about windows then he should go back to normal drive partitioning instead of the UEFI he has now....

As far as Windows goes I guess that was directed at me, well I will not shut down my windows 7 machine until the programs that I use are made in linux, so far there is no linux version of my cd/dvd disc printer software, also I am not aware of any linux software that can burn 6 dvd's or cd's at one time like windows does using nero....  Until then my windows 7 will run daily from 8 am till 8pm....  I would also appreciate you stop stabbing people who use windows, for whatever their reasons are...  There is no cure all OS out there that does everything, except maybe a MAC and I can't afford a mac let alone mac software....

OK, that's unfortunate. You can go back and undo all of those changes. I hoped that it would be something relatively simple, and maybe it is, but I have reached my limit and cannot suggest anything further. :-[

It is quite possible that the initial changes that you made in your BIOS are the root of the problem. PCNetSpec is better informed than I about such BIOS settings and can probably help you to get things working the way they should.

Sorry that I wasn't able to help you ...

- I've been here since Peppermint One  I'm very comfortable to delete any Windows system, but I don't wish to be left with nothing.

Thanks for that info.

No, nothing's changed so far.  The only way to shut down is to power off.

But thanks for your interest and your help.
Cheers,
Tony

Hello again Robert,

His problem is related to the win8 drive partitioning, I would be willing to bet if he does not care about windows then he should go back to normal drive partitioning instead of the UEFI he has now....

Please explain this - I'm not certain what you mean.

Thanks,
Tony

He is going to have to get rid of that UEFI partitioning table and go back to normal partitioning and possibly reinstall Pep 5....  Unless Mark has other suggestions that is what I would do, I don't think pep 5 plays to well with that new partitioning table in win 8.1...  :)
