What's with all the Kernel Updates? (SOLVED)
« on: June 04, 2019, 08:25:39 am »
Okay so I have a query, I initially thought that the most kernel images a Ubuntu based system should have, so that it does not get confused and being unable to boot is two. Take a looksy at the update I just received and no doubt countless others will receive today.

So we have three of them, six if you count the initrd.img ones. Tried removing the old ones, but only got rid of the 4.15.50 and kept the 51. It was fine on just the 4.18.20 I know it ain't Peps fault, but why so many? Like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't try to fix it.

Is this a manual upgrade from Peppermint 9 ?

If not, you must have installed something that has linux-image-generic flagged as a dependency rather than linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04
(so it pulled in the 4.15 kernel too)

This was a fresh install from ISO not an upgrade. It's happened on my new build too.

You have to understand how the hardware enablement stack works, there are still packages in the 18.04 repos that flag the 4.15 kernel as a dependency (even though they really don't need it) .. IIRC some of the nvidia drivers do this, specially if they're from a PPA .. so there's always the chance the old 4.15 kernel will get spuriously installed but it'll do no harm.

That's what it is, my Nvidia Drivers then, because I've been racking my brain, trying to find the piece of software that 4.15 kernel could need. So yes makes sense now, thank you Mark, my mind is now at ease.  ;D

The nvidia drivers in the 18.04 repos (390) will likely contain something like:-
Code: [Select]
linux-image-generic | linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04
listed in it's dependencies .. which basically means (either of).

Where the ones in the PPA likely just have
Code: [Select]
linux-image-generic
so will pull in the stock 18.04 kernel (4.15) .. even though it's probably not necessary.

Theoretically you could modify the packages control file, but it's easiest to just ignore the additional kernel, it's not hurting anything.
