Holy wow Zeb, what does one do with a monster machine like that? The closest I could get to something like that is the desk it's sitting on.  :o
What was I thinking?

I guess the AHCI driver/hardware for AMD has come on in leaps and bounds then (for Ryzen/Threadripper) as AMD CPU's (for example the A8 and A10) used to boot slower than their Intel equivalents (i3 and i5) because of that driver (or possibly the hardware it drove) .. well at least that was my experience anyway.

Not that boot times are the most important thing in the world .. but they are nice, and how most people pick up their idea of 'system speed'.

[EDIT]

Though I am beginning to wonder how much the BIOS affects (at least human perception of) boot times more than anything else .. As everyone knows I have a load of Dell 'E' series laptops, the oldest of which is an E6520, now the spec difference between the E6520 and the E6530 (a year later) is minimal and yet the older laptop sits at a black screen after displaying the Dell logo for about 8 seconds before continuing to boot, the E6530 spend less than a second there .. so it's my guess that the older BIOS is taking it's sweet time to initialise some piece of hardware or other before passing control to the OS.

Thinking about it, even though from MY perspective the boot times for the older E6520 are gonna 'feel' 8 seconds longer than the E6530 (a lot when you consider the E6530 boots in about 4 seconds), bootchart would probably show them as pretty similar because at the point it hangs for 8 seconds the bootchart logging hasn't yet been started.

[EDIT 2]

Have you got all your other drives in the new beast yet Zeb ? .. that too may have an effect on at least perceived boot times that may not be measurable by bootchart as the BIOS has to initialise them all prior to starting the OS.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is what a human perceives as 'boot time' and what bootchart can actually measure are two entirely different things .. and possibly the root of your confusion (?)

Bootchart can only measure from when logging started, which can often be some considerable time after 'power on'.

Regards Zeb...

Never say never... Gentoo live stream install coming soon - minus the needles as it would be rather difficult to see the keyboard  :P

Have fun...

Gentoo will be quick (because you build everything for your specific hardware and nothing more), but not quick enough that it'll claw back all the time you spend compiling software and updates on a general purpose PC.

If you ask me, Gentoo is a TERRIFIC OS for a specific purpose PC where speed and/or footprint are of paramount consideration (Eg. some kind of system controller, kiosk, mixing/editing desk, etc.), and where updates and additional software are rarely going to be necessary .. it's not IMHO an OS for a general purpose PC.

Maintenance is FAR too much work for a general purpose PC and will wear thin really quickly .. pretty much as quickly as the "I run Gentoo BTW" will wear on others ;)
(okay maybe not quite that quickly, because that == immediately :)))
