PCManFM forgetting bookmarks after reboot (solved)
« on: August 16, 2014, 03:36:34 am »
I am running Peppermint 5 on my netbook and my desktop. On the Netbook, I set a bookmark using PCManFM that I don't need any more. I have changed it numerous times, but upon reboot - PCManFM defaults back to that first bookmark. The 6 bookmarks I add go away and I am stuck with the one I don't want any more.

Here is a screen shot:

Does anyone have any ideas? I would really like to have it look like the picture.

What are you trying to bookmark ?

and what's the contents of:
Code: [Select]
gedit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
(that's where bookmarks are stored for Peppermint 5)

on my desktop it is:

Spoiler (click here to view / hide)
file:///home/tienie/Documents Documents
file:///home/tienie/Music Music
file:///home/tienie/Pictures Pictures
file:///home/tienie/Videos Videos
file:///home/tienie/Downloads Downloads
file:///home/tienie/Dropbox Dropbox
[close]

checking now what netbook is (I want both to be like this one above).

OK, my netbook is:

file:///etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint autostart

I am trying now to use super user to gedit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks , I have copied and pasted the desktop bookmarks over the one line that my netbook had. I am rebooting now, and I am holding thumbs that this has fixed it.

EDIT: It works, editing the file using super user permissions has worked. Thanks!

That file should NOT require elevated privileges to edit .. that probably explains why they're not being saved.

What's the output from:
Code: [Select]
ls -l ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks

and STOP editing stuff in your home folder as root .. that will likely cause the file to become owned by root, and could potentially cause you all sorts of problems.

Hi, PCNetSpec. Thanks for all the help.

The output is: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 220 Aug 16 19:09 /home/tienie/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks

The problem started (if I remember correctly) when I was trying to get Cairo-dock to stop running at startup. I must have opened the wrong folder as Root - it was certainly not intentional.

Is there an easy way to fix this? or should I rather reformat and start over?

As long as your username is tienie (if it's not, stop now and tell me what it is)

run:
Code: [Select]
sudo chown tienie:tienie /home/tienie/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
then
Code: [Select]
chmod 664 /home/tienie/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
now post the output from:
Code: [Select]
ls -l ~/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
again

hopefully the output will be:-
-rw-rw-r-- 1 tienie tienie 174 Aug 16 18:31 /home/mark/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks
(important parts in red)

I followed your instructions, here is the output:

-rw-rw-r-- 1 tienie tienie 220 Aug 16 19:09 /home/tienie/.config/gtk-3.0/bookmarks

Looks good, I hope.
