In Ubuntu 19.04, Canonical introduced the ability to download Nvidia's propriety graphics driver during the OS installation process (provided the user has an internet connection). That was a welcome step toward making gaming more accessible for newcomers. With the upcoming Ubuntu 19.10, however, Canonical is following in the footsteps of System76's Pop!_OS and slapping Nvidia's driver (both 390 and 418) right onto the ISO.

Hmm, theoretically this would be possible with the 18.04.3 release too .. I mean all they have to do is put the drivers in /pool on the ISO

At the end of the day nothing changes except where they're installed FROM .. currently they need an active internet connection to be downloaded from the repo, but anything in /pool on the ISO acts as another repository (whilst the LiveUSB/LiveDVD is inserted)

There would theoretically be nothing stopping us doing the same (except maybe licensing, which I'd need to look into).

Might look into that for the respin, that way the 418/430 drivers would be available OOTB in PM10 .. would need to talk a few people into testing though.

Downside is it would increase the ISO size considerably, even for people without NVIDIA cards.

Unless we did 2 ISO's (with/without the drivers in /pool) .. or possibly started using xz compression again, which slows Live sessions.

And let's remember that Canonical isn't forcing this driver on anyone. They are distributing it, which I suppose will rub less pragmatic open source advocates the wrong way. But in my opinion this is the right call, and drastically lowers the barrier to entry for newcomers. The majority of Linux users need Nvidia's proprietary driver to do anything GPU-intensive (like machine learning and gaming) outside of basic desktop usage and web browsing.

It should also reduce potential headaches for laptop users on hybrid graphics; too many times I've booted into a black screen when using the Nouveau driver.

Zeb....

Any future testing is currently suspended until the arrival of Colossus V ... (It had better arrive next week Friday or Sat - or I won't be safe to be around.) Patience is NOT in my vocabulary.

Just Saying  :D

Meh. Overrated fluff, in my opinion. And, I use NVIDIA graphics on two of my computers. However, two others have AMD and one has Intel graphics. So, that driver is useless on those systems. Having the option to install the graphics driver during OS installation is the perfect midway point between having a smaller .iso size and having less to do post install, in my opinion.

By the way, I tried a Xubuntu install recently where I chose to install the NVIDIA driver during installation and it didn't work. It does with Peppermint, though. 8)

Xubuntu has to be 18.10 or 19.04 to work... Can't remember which.

Yeah AFAIK non of the 18.04's will have it until 18.04.3 is released .. we got it before they did by jumping the gun :)

In other words it's in the upstream repos, but non of the *buntu's have built an 18.04.n ISO with it yet .. that will be 18.04.3

I think you're right, no point in making the ISO bigger for everyone .. anyone with nvidia will still get it automagically as long as they have an active internet connection during install

Yeah, it was 18.04.2. I don't use any -untu that's not a LTS because 9 months isn't a real support cycle. It's a testing cycle.

It's dumb to have it not be a feature since there was a tick box for it on Ubiquity. That just creates confusion and leads to more support threads on their forums. ::)

I agree with Scifidude,

If they tick that box searching for the latest Nvidia driver during seems simple enough.

Honestly I've rarely found it difficult to use "Additional Drivers" in the Peppermint Settings Panel

I'm using an Nvidia 750ti if anyone needs help testing.
