Softpedia Peppermint 10 Review
https://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Operating-Systems/Linux-Distributions/Peppermint-56051.shtml

Check out the "Default Applications" section...

PCManFM, wrong, Nemo.
Mirage, wrong, Xviewer.
GNOME MPlayer, wrong, Xplayer.
Transmission, hey they got one right.
Chromium, wrong, Firefox.
Guyadeque, wrong, Xplayer (again).
Gedit, wrong, Xed.
Evince, wrong, Xreader.
Xchat, wrong, dropped years ago.
Dropbox client, whoopie they got another one.

LOL,  two out of ten .. if you're going to publish a 'review' of a distro, THEN ACTUALLY REVIEW IT, this is just lazy reporting of the highest lowest order.

The picture is of Peppermint 3. They're not the only ones unimpressed.  :-X

Yeah I just noticed that ::)

I couldn't care less if they're 'impressed', they're perfectly entitled to form that opinion after testing it, but for $%^& sake if you're going to publish a 'review' or even just an 'opinion piece' of other peoples work, you owe it to them to have ACTUALLY TRIED IT.

Aren't they the site that's mainly known for providing out-of-date downloads anyway? I suppose it sort of fits their ethos  ;D

LOL .. dunno, don't think I've ever used them .. IIRC I vaguely remember Google used to point me there every time I was having to search for WIndows software, but I never actually downloaded anything from there because it just 'looked' iffy.

Lazy reporting, yes for not updating the main article. However they do link to a changelog for Peppermint 10 detailing the actual current software etc. It's right there under 'What's new in Peppermint 10'

Hi Ghost 76,

Welcome to the forums  :)

ABSOLUTELY  no excuse for shoddy reporting, whether they link to the Release Notes or not - people will simply read that review and make an assumption based on the review and screenshot.

I am now thinking we have the right to ask them to take it down as it is SO BLATANTLY WRONG

I'm not actually THAT fussed about it Zeb, I was pointing it out more for the humour (and a generalised poke at the way advertising has killed accuracy of the press) .. something tells me their Linux section is little read anyway.

I for one have never heard anyone say, hey I'm wondering what distro to try next .. must visit softpedia :)

Hiya Ghosty, welcome to the forum my mate :)

I'd kinda have to agree with Zeb, it's in English, and we read left --> right, the damage is done well before you get to the 'new' part. But really my point is really not about damage to us (which I doubt it does), as much as an obligation to their readers and advertisers. The entire thing was structured so for the least amount of work they could get the search engines interested (I found it by googling "Peppermint 10 Review"), to me it just screams "we don't care about readers, our primary goal is adding 'content' to build advertising space around" .. between that lazy rubbish, clickbait, and agenda driven political bias, sadly the way the press have pretty much all gone lately thanks to advertising money detracting from accuracy .. articles are no longer written with the reader in mind :(

If tomorrow we decided to get rid of lazy/politically biased/'fake'/opinion dressed as fact/advert driven news .. I'm afraid there'd be none left. What ever happened to simply reporting accurate facts and letting the user create their own 'truth'.

Okay soap boxing over :))

One thing I did find interesting though .. it highlights (at least to me) how much we've changed over the years...

I'm not saying that's a good or bad thing (I can't speak for everyone), just that it's a fact :)

So is that a Yay or a Nay to posting a comment which would read

"Just a shame you showed a screen shot from Peppermint 3 and got virtually every default application wrong. It would have helped if you did your homework before posting such articles."

I'm neither asking you to, nor asking you not to .. howzat ?

Your call my mate, last time I looked it's still a semi-free world .. if you wanna get something off your chest have at it before they remove the ability :))

[EDIT]

Though another way of looking at it is that you'd be playing into their hands and validating the article to advertisers.

As I said, your call.
