Installing Steam Games on Peppermint 9 (64 Bit)
« on: May 21, 2019, 10:34:06 am »
This is targeted at gamers who want to install the Game Store "Steam" on their computer.  I was able to easily install the store, but when I tried to download the game I wanted "Overload", download speeds were very slow (They were less than 1/10 of my network speed.)  After reading various posts in the Steam commiunity forums, I thought maybe I had a problem with an overabundance of DNS queries flooding the local DNS server.

So I started Wireshark, and verified that the IPV6 Queries were being refused several times a second.  On a hunch I turned off IPV6 on the computer.   That resolved the problem. now Steam is downloading the game at or near line speed.

Turning off IPV6 is pretty straightforward but requires you use the terminal;

Here is the "Script" I used:

sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1

I put in a text file on my desktop, labled IPV6 Disable and then made it executeable, this is done by:

1.  Right clicking it,
2 Selecting properties, at the bolttom of the menu
3. Select the permissions tab at top
4. At the bottom select allow executing file as program
5.  Save it

When you run it, you will need to enter your password

I also created an IPV6 enable text file to turn IPV6 back on:

Use the same process, except the text in the file is:

sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=0

Hope this helps people trying to download Steam games.

Turning off IPV6 is pretty straightforward but requires you use the terminal;

Alternatively you can just Edit connections and set the IPv6 drop-down on its tab to "Ignore".

That's not quite the same as completely disabling it murraymint .. I'm not saying it would or wouldn't work in this situation, just that it's not the same thing.

Fair enough. The last time I tried out Steam I didn't notice a problem.
