GRUB problem after dual boot with PCLinuxOS
« on: May 17, 2019, 12:33:38 pm »
Long time no see here on this forum !
During a re-arranging of my computer I first installed PCLinuxOS KDE5 (sda1) and then Peppermint 9 (sda2). After Peppermint was installed I placed its bootloader on sda. After the installation I booted into Peppermint and did an "update-grub".
Everything went fine: At boot I got the Peppermint boot choice window and whatever I did choose it booted into that distro.
But then I decided to activate the PCLinuxOS boot choice window at boot by booting into that distro and made there the "update-grub" again then and I ran into a lot of trouble.
Every time I choose Peppermint on that boot choice window it indeed boots into Peppermint but during that boot procedure there a black screen displays in a flash a lot of for me crasy text for just one second. Something like "ACPI error ...... " before it boots into Peppermint.
What can I do to get rid of that?

What happens if you update GRUB again in Peppermint?

What happens if you update GRUB again in Peppermint?

Then it starts probing other o.s.es and I can see that it detects PCLinuxOS. Nothing strange shows up then.
But if I reboot then, to my surprise, the PCLinuxOS boot choice windows still pops-up where I expected the Peppermint boot choice
window.

Are you using a MBR or GPT partition scheme?

I have UEFI so it must be GPT partition scheme.

I had the same problem a while back with Solus and Peppermint 10. However, it wasn't Peppermint's fault, the fault was solely with Solus. Solus doesn't use GRUB for GPT partition schemes, it only uses GRUB for MBR partition schemes. So, Peppermint wasn't correctly seeing it because it was using some weird bootloader.

Now, I'm not saying that's what happened here. It looks like PCLinuxOS still uses GRUB. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about UEFI or GPT to hazard a guess. However, knowing that you're using UEFI and GPT may help others when trying to help.
