triaging a Win10 install w/P9 [reSOLVED]
« on: May 11, 2019, 02:02:58 pm »
Hubster thinks his platter harddrive is failing. When I inserted the P9 LiveUSB the Check Disk for errors didn't throw up any errors, but swiftly blew some txt by and asked me to remove media to reboot.

So I proceeded to install P9 via LiveUSB and its sitting and spinning on the Normal Installation page questions for the last 5 minutes... I think I agree his platter harddrive is dead...

Check Disk for Errors checks the LiveCD/LiveUSB not the HDD.

Chuck an SSD in it, and reinstall Win10 (if that's what he wants) .. it's free (if the PC has ever had Win10 on it).

He's been messing with it since we returned, today he ran down and brought home a 1 TB Samsung Evo... and he's off to the races. His machines have only ever had Win...  7, 8 & 10...

I was only deploying the P9 LiveUSB to prove his harddrive wasn't the issue. But he'd already decided it was the drive.
 ::)

FWIW, P9 Install was still stuck on the same page when we returned 45 minutes later.

EDIT: hubster's supposedly dead drive is spinning along nicely as back up in my machine. I haven't yet tried to install anything to it directly though. ... its a much newer drive than the platter drive I have been using...

Triage is a good word for it.

Quote
triage noun
triage | \ trē-ˈzh
, ˈtrē-ˌzh\
Definition of triage

1a : the sorting of and allocation of treatment to patients and especially battle and disaster victims according to a system of priorities designed to maximize the number of survivors
b : the sorting of patients (as in an emergency room) according to the urgency of their need for care
2 : the assigning of priority order to projects on the basis of where funds and other resources can be best used, are most needed, or are most likely to achieve success

Windows is dying, perhaps we should let it and focus on other operating systems. ;)

He's been screaming and pounding and stomping on Win10 for 5 days now Chris ... err @scifidude79... I saw an opportunity to convert him to Linux by proving his harddrive wasn't dying by triaging with my P9 Live USB. But his mind was already made up and the LiveUSB stalled for over an hour. He's been using Windows operating systems since his BigFedGov workspace converted from the Xerox Operating system, which Apple bought.

So he's a hard sell...

Oh and Why is it raining in Arizona right now? Monsoon like lightning and a pretty heavy downpour... but temps never climbed outta the 70's today?

I don't try to convert people to Linux. They have to come willingly or they'll never like it and will go back to Windows.

Marble-sized hail in Payson, today...  :)

EDIT

Oh, that's right. You're the guy that wants to see a pic, or it didn't happen.

Check the Exif...

I get that Chris err scifidude79, yet the drive he declared was dead, is currently perfectly happy as part of my 2.5 TB of storage... even had to search it for a file he hadn't backed up...

He does things in trading and quicken on his Win10 machine that can't be done in linux, yet I think I'll be able to create a PMX partition on his new SSD so he can play with our French, Russian & Ukrainian installs down the line...

And spread anti-linux sentiments from that point forward without ever having given it a proper chance.

I'll help anyone make the transition, but they have to WANT to themselves or the vast majority of time it'll do more damage than good.

A friend at work is helping another friend of his with a system build, but the guy blew his whole budget on components, so no money left for a Windows license.  :'( So, my friend has been trying Pop!_OS, which is System76's own Linux distribution, Ubuntu based. Anyway, at last report, he was really enjoying it, and he wasn't even trying it for himself. I guess he tried Debian ages ago, when it was more terminal and less GUI based, I'm thinking before Ubuntu. So, he didn't realize how user friendly Linux has gotten in the past 15 or so years. I don't know if he's fully converted, but he's enjoying Linux, and that's the first step. :)
