if I hold the space key down for a second or two, I get the mobo spash screen and then the grub menu. If I boot into Peppermint I get this,

Try disabling secureboot.

Too late, I already recovered a previous Timeshift snapshot and it boots up normal now. I don't have a graphics card installed now and I'll stay this way til I can get the motherboard trouble shot by a tech.
What was I thinking?

That message was probably about the nvidia drivers not being signed properly for secureboot

Secureboot is a PITA .. I usually just disable it as a matter of course.

Well I've got some good news and I've got some bad news. After my first graphics card  I bought to have HDMI got damaged, I bought a couple of adaptors along with another graphics card. The VGA output of the new card didn't work so I used the DVI-1 to VGA I had bought and away I went. It is this card that the HDMI has just quit working. Today I remembered that I have a DVI-1 to HDMI adaptor so I installed the original card and the HDMI works but the VGA output doesn't. That puzzled me because that part of the card did work before. Anyway, the good news is that I plugged in the VGA cable to the onboard VGA port and it works! So now I have both outputs again. The bad news is, I am only getting 1024x768 pixels out of the DVI-1 port. I could try looking for a propriatery driver but that would probably upset the onboard graphics. Computers are so much fun!   ;D

Secure boot has always been disabled on this machine.
