Executable game viewer won't run (SOLVED)
« on: May 01, 2019, 04:03:39 am »
I downloaded and extracted a game viewer as I've done in other distros where it ran fine, but in LXLE it had to run as an executable and because it provided the option to do so, it also ran fine. Here in Peppermint it identifies it again as an executable, but doesn't show an option to run it as such, so when I run it using the run button option nothing happens. What must I do to run this executable viewer software?

Thanks for considering my question

Hi JC2027, and welcome to the forum :)

Any chance you can name (or even better link to) the software so we can take a look at it ?

Okay worked perfectly for me .. I just extracted the archive, then clicked on the "firestorm" shell script, selected "Run" and it started :)

Is that what you did ?

I take it you're definitely running the 64bit version of Peppermint ?

Run these commands in sequence
Code: [Select]
mkdir ~/phoenix-firestorm
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/phoenix-firestorm
then
Code: [Select]
wget http://downloads.firestormviewer.org/linux/Phoenix_FirestormOS-Releasex64_x86_64_6.0.2.56680.tar.xz
then
Code: [Select]
tar -xvf Phoenix_FirestormOS-Releasex64_x86_64_6.0.2.56680.tar.xz
then
Code: [Select]
cd ~/phoenix-firestorm/Phoenix_FirestormOS-Releasex64_x86_64_6.0.2.56680
then
Code: [Select]
./firestorm
did it start ? .. if not, did you get any errors ?

I will do that and thank you. In the meantime, here is a video of how I proceeded to install and then run it. Notice the stopwatch as an indication of wait time. Indeed, it never starts.
   :(
I should mention that everything is taking too long to start on this laptop, perhaps it's the low MBPS wi-fi connection.

Here is the execution of your commands:

The terminal is still waitig at that last point

Notice:
bin/do-not-directly-run-firestorm-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libGLU.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
*** Bad shutdown ($LL_RUN_ERR). ***

Okay 2 things please...

1) Can you please not post videos where they aren't necessary .. people can't cut and paste text from a video, nor can search engines index them and this forum needs to be searchable so others with the same/similar issue can also benefit.
(luckily you also posted the text underneath your video because otherwise I wouldn't have seen it .. I generally won't watch videos)

2) Can you please not enlarge the text on this forum unless for things like section headers, etc .. making the text oversized won't get you a quicker answer, it just makes the forum look untidy.

I'm not having a go, just trying to keep the forum neat and searchable .. it's kinda my job ;)

Okay now to the actual problem, it looks like you're missing the libGLU.so.1 shared library .. you can install this by running:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install libglu1-mesa
Hopefully your application should now work :)
(I must have already had this installed on my system)
