USB Wifi compatability.
« on: April 02, 2019, 02:26:42 pm »
I hope this is the right topic. We have a Dell Optiplex 780 tower. It was refurbished when we bought it. It has only 2 gigs of RAM. It apparently cannot be upgraded. I am considering setting it up in our guest bedroom. I would remove Windows 10 and install Peppermint, to get better performance from the 2 gigs. The catch - it has no internal wifi. I have been using a USB wifi device. Will Peppermint recognize the device? If I cannot get wifi I'll have to stick to Windows.

have you tried running Peppermint from a USB  and using the USB wifi adapter? I would think if it works that way it should work even better installed.

Gotta be somewhere 15 minutes ago, but quickly...

Why do you think your Dell can't be upgraded?

There's a very good chance wifi will work, or can be made to work, but as MNFrozenfish suggests why not Boot a Peppermint LiveUSB and see if the wireless works out of the box BEFORE installing Peppermint ?

Why do you think your Dell can't be upgraded?

Took it to a repair shop. The "repairman" said he couldn't get the RAM necessary. On top of that, the tower has a lock that I do not have the key to.
The "repairman" tried to sell us a custom-built computer. The more I think about it , the more I think he may have been scamming us.

Took it to a repair shop. The "repairman" said he couldn't get the RAM necessary [...]

Your Dell 780 Tower uses the same memory as my HP Compaq 8000 Elite. I bought 8GB of used RAM on eBay, last year, for $22.50

Still working perfectly well.

And, here's a Peppermint user's Dell 780 with a  Quad core Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 CPU (and  a WiFi card).

Those CPUs are going for $10 - $12 USD on eBay, etcetera, etcetera...

Anyway, if it was me, I'd bust that lock, and start going to town on it.

Might surprise you, how well old Dells perform on Peppermint  ;)

If he said he can't get the memory .. erm YES, he is.
(unless he said he 'didn't have' the memory, which is completely different)

[EDIT]

That said, he may simply have not liked the idea of working on a system with a case lock where you couldn't prove ownership by providing a key.
