Some videos not playing on Opera (SOLVED)
« on: March 25, 2019, 03:41:58 pm »
Hi all,

I realise that this video won't be for all tastes!  But it doesn't play.  I get no controls to play it.  I contacted the site and they gave the cop out response "we don't support linux".  So I thought I would ask the real experts here! 8)

https://www.torahanytime.com/#/lectures?v=79737

I am on Opera Beta 60.0.3255.8,
Also tried in Firefox with the same lack of playing controls.

Thanks in advance,
Martin

Yeah, that's one of the weird foibles of running Opera.

I run Opera Stable and Opera Beta, and they both have this problem - sometimes, but not always - after updating.

Whenever I update Opera et al. the first thing I do is check H.264 to see if it's working: https://www.youtube.com/html5

All boxes should be checked and  'blue'. About 20% of the time, after an update, the H.264 boxes will be X'ed and red.

When that happens, the workaround is easy.

One of the reasons I have Chromium installed on this machine is so I can file rape it.

The haxor is to copy '/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libffmpeg.so' file and paste it into the '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-beta/' folder.

And, that's it, until the next time it happens...  :)

Also tried in Firefox with the same lack of playing controls.

Somebody else will need to help you with Fx.

Only time I use Fx is to confuse AI bots. LoL

The video at that link is working perfectly for me in FF .. it did take some considerable time to start, but it did eventually.

double-clicking the video (so it starts fullscreen) may speed it up.

Thanks all.  It worked in Chromium.  I will keep that in the background for such emergencies (not sure I have the energy to copy and paste files all of the time lol!!)

Thanks Vin, this works on Opera stable too. The OP's vid now plays after

Code: [Select]
sudo cp /usr/lib/chromium-browser/libffmpeg.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera

Heh. Glad it worked out for you, but using a script is cheating.   ;D

I use the oldskool way, to exercise my brain, e.g. build 'muscle memory.'

They say one needs to do something seven (7) times, before your brain remembers it.

Just saying...
