connection to cups server lost
« on: March 23, 2019, 08:08:01 pm »
Hi,

For some unknown reason when I try to connect to my printer there is no connection.  I've gone back to 'printers' in System and tried to configure my Lexmark MS317dn printer again.  I get 'printing service not available' and a panel that suggests I 'start service with 'connect.'  When I select this panel I get a message about cups and socks which, when clicked, gives me the ' not available' bit again.

So I tried what has worked before, which starts with 'ipp://cups-server/printers/printer-queue' which doesn't work either.  (I'm going on memory on the last command and I hope its right).

Any suggestions would be welcome.  Though it's after midnight here and I won't pick up any replies till tomorrow.  Hope you understand.

Are you able to log into the CUPS web interface
http://localhost:631
?

Yes I can.  And I get a table of options - any idea which way I go?

Good, so CUPS is obviously running.

Maybe try going to

Administration > Manage Printers

and remove your printer in there .. then re-add it.

PCNetSpec,

Well, I can't do that.  When I select printers I get the message about nothing is available because i am not connected.    Hhmm.

What I have done is to use my live usb P'mint stick to bring up P'mint and then use it to see if my printer is working.  It is.  I'm looking at a test page now.  So the problem isn't physical.

Now, when I open up Libre Office Print, and look at the printer options in the panel, all I can see is 'Generic Printer' which doesn't accept my Print command.  Where this Generic thing came from, I dunno.  I'm starting to think I should re-install PeppermintOS from my usb stick and see if that results in my Lexmark printer being recognised.  It was up to a couple of days ago so I think I have nothing much to lose......

That's your call, but the "Generic Printer" in LO is normal.

Might be interesting to know the contents of
Code: [Select]
sudo xed /etc/cups/printers.conf
and if restarting CUPS allows you to add your printer
Code: [Select]
sudo service cups restart

PCNetSpec,

Well, I couldn't show you anything!  When I tried to boot up the computer all I could get was a black and white screen full of information like 'contains file system with errors' and  'root file system on dev sda requires manual fsck'.  That strikes me as vaguely obscene.   I tried again and again but in the end just re-installed PeppermintOS.  Now everything is fine again.

I suppose that I should have learnt something over this, but I haven't.    I suppose that I must have hit the wrong key somehow, sometime, to cause the original fault so I'm going to be a bit more careful in future.  I can live in hope of course that nothing like it will happen again to cause me to bother you again.

Allow me to thank you for your willingness to be of service.   I'd hate to have to go back to Windows........
