FIRST .. MAKE SURE you copy everything you need off it .. there is NO WAY to format a drive without loosing EVERYTHING on it.

I have no idea what you mean by -  'for all systems'

[EDIT]

I will NOT assist you in formatting this drive until you confirm you understand EVERYTHING will be wiped, and confirm you've copied off everything you need to keep.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND FORMATTING WILL ERASE THE DRIVE ?

HAVE YOU COPIED EVERYTHING OFF THE DRIVE YOU NEED TO KEEP ?

Please cofirm BOTH questions above and we'll continue .. but please stop trying to pre-empt what you *think* I'm going to tell you what to do.
(yes I mean just the USB stick will be erased .. unless of course you select the wrong drive to format .. which is why I'm trying to be careful here)

"Don't overwrite existing data" does NOT mean you'll still have access to it .. you won't
and
"Compatible with all systems (FAT)" is probably NOT what you want.

is this USB stick ever going to get used on a Windows PC ?

OK, you're probably best selecting

Erase: Overwrite existing data with zeroes (slow)
and
Type: Compatible with most systems (NTFS)

I'm 99.9% sure a Mac can read NTFS, and it doesn't have the file size limitations of FAT .. it can also be read by both Linux and Windows.

OK, you've clicked the wrong button .. you're attempting to write a new partition table.

Let's start again from scratch .. exit Disks.

Open a terminal and post the output from this command:
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l

it only seems to want to format to Fat, there is no way i have 13 hours to spare and i would never keep my laptop on for 13 hours!
so i guess this is all i can do is use formatted to fat.
