So what happens if you run
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-418
because it's there in the PPA

Hi it then came up with

Code: [Select]
zebedee@i7-peppermint ~ $ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-418
[sudo] password for zebedee:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-418 : Depends: xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.19.6-1ubuntu2~)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
zebedee@i7-peppermint ~ $

so using your same principle I did

Code: [Select]
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-core

Which worked - I then did the first command again which worked and then I was able to use

Code: [Select]
sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

Which worked.

ok so now I have the problem that my Pep freezes when it gets to the desktop - mouse and keyboard.

So I removed all nvidia drivers - I removed reference to the nvidia ppa and I can get to the pep desktop with nouveau

the minute I re-install nvidia - even 415 it freezes.

So is this another case of too many leftovers from too many installs to be able to back it out and  get it working.  Remembering this is the one on the hwe

Regards Zeb...

ps the new install is UKUU v 5.01 kernel and nvidia 4.18 and its working perfectly  - the old install is still there but can't get at it via desktop unless I go into recovery mode again and return to nouveau

How important is it to you Zeb ?

Previously when I've had a case of 'nvidia package version confusion' on my machines, it's literally taken hours to figure out (and even then I wasn't sure how I finally fixed things).
(there's just too many variables)

nvidia drivers are great when they're working, but they're a b*tch when they're not.

This is why it'd be nice if they'd open source them like AMD .. if they did that there'd be no argument between you and Ryan, nvidia would walk away with it.

As it stands, both have downsides :(

Um... Soooo, is nVidia 418 working now, if one doesn't fiddle with the settings?

I'm building a 'new' machine, and I installed nVidia 396.54 last night @ 4:00 AM... or was it morning? LoL  ;D

I don't want to get mired down, trying to put Humpty Dumpty back together again, in the middle of a fresh install.

Newer versions have given me fits lately, on multiple machines. 396.54 is basically plug n' play on my machines.

BTW, Ubuntu has it's own official PPA For proprietary graphics drivers.

I get nVidia 396.54 over here: https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

As far as I know yes .. the problem has always been present, mix components between versions and things get very difficult to sort out.

It's not always as simple as purging nvidia* .. as you're using a PPA dependencies can also get mixed and/or configs (possibly for the dependencies) left behind that conflict .. some times it works, other times it doesn't, I know I've been there and it's painful.

Problems only seem to arise when you've swapped between version a few times .. but I'm still not sure what the root cause is.

That's been my experience, too.

Okay, I'm sticking with the version that I KNOW works, and pinning it.

Thanks!  ;)
