Firefox save dialog problem
« on: March 01, 2019, 03:33:05 pm »
I've been dealing with a strange Firefox behavior for a while now. Everytime a save dialog appears, the "cancel" and "ok" are distorted and misplaced. It take some noticeable seconds before it corrects itself (on it own). I can't click on anything else in that interval. And if i switch between "open" or "save" it happens again, but the lag is even longer. In some occasions (not tied to the file size) it takes up to 20-30 seconds for the system to unfreeze. I also have other distros installed on the same computer and this problem only affects Firefox.

Could it be a system theme issue ?

if not, have you tried Firefox with a clean profile ?

Does this happen in a Guest session (which will already have a clean Firefox profile) ?

I have given a try to:
- changing themes
- changing icon themes
- changing widget theme
And I still have the issue.

In the guest session, there is no problem at all. The save dialog shows and works as expected.

That would suggest the problem lies in your Firefox profile, have you tried starting Firefox in safe mode (with all extensions disabled) to see if it's an extension causing the issue ?

With Firefox CLOSED, run
Code: [Select]
firefox --safe-mode
then click the "Start Firefox in Safe Mode" button.

Does the problem persist in that browser session ?

If not, suspect a plugin/addon

If it still persists try clearing the browser cache completely (then restarting the browser).

if it still persists we may need to reset Firefox to defaults, but that'll loose your passwords, bookmarks, etc.

Sorry for the delay, I've been away from my computer...

At first, I couldn't start Firefox on safe mode:

Code: [Select]
firefox --safe-mode
Failed to execute process '/usr/sbin/firefox'. Reason:
exec: Exec format error
The file '/usr/sbin/firefox' is marked as an executable but could not be run by the operating system.

I've found that the problem was that I'm using the fish shell. Back to bash, the command started Firefox in safe mode. However, the save dialog problem remains.

Okay as an experiment....

WITH FIREFOX CLOSED

rename the
~/.mozilla/firefox
folder to say
~/.mozilla/firefox-backup
now start firefox .. did that solve the problem ?

If not, you can always CLOSE FIREFOX, then delete the newly created
~/.mozilla/firefox
and rename the
~/.mozilla/firefox-backup
back to
~/.mozilla/firefox
to get back to where you are now.

Ok, closed Firefox entirely, renamed the directory to "firefox-backup", opened a fresh Firefox instance but the problem persists...

I'll try going back to defaults for all my theming (windows, colors, fonts, icons, mouse pointer, etc.) and completely restarting the computer.

[EDIT]

No, still have the problem.

Well if it works in a Guest session, it's something in your home folder that's breaking it.
(possibly a theme setting .. but also maybe something you changed in dconf-editor)

Maybe try creating another user account, MAKE SURE to add that new user to the sudo group (or just the account as an administrator) then log onto the new account .. if that account works, you can start moving stuff between the two home folders.

I've created a new user, just like a fresh install. But it is also affected by the same dialog problem.

I've decided to try again the guest account and it works properly.  :-\

I've also tried to reinstall firefox with
Code: [Select]
sudo apt purge firefox
sudo apt install firefox

No luck yet...

What should I look for in my home folder?
Code: [Select]

Okay I'm baffled too now .. I can't see why a new user account would be affected if a Guest account isn't, they'd both have default settings :-\

Can you provide a screenshot of the problem.

I don't know why the image isn't showing on the original post. Here it goes again:

The buttons appears normally, quickly shifts (as in the picture) and in a second or two goes back to normal. If I click to alternate between "open" or "save" the problem repeats. I can't click on nothing in the dialog window while it's displayed like that.

Does it happen if you change the window manager theme back to default in the Peppermint Control Center ?

And if you disable/enable desktop effects ?

[EDIT]

It's almost like screen tearing, I wonder if this is anything to do with the modesetting graphics driver .. I'll try to test this later on another PC.

Tried both, same problem... I do have other distros installed in the same computer and they all have almost the same software installed. This problem only appears in Peppermint. I used Peppermint 8 before, and this never happened.
