Tiling window manager on Peppermint
« on: March 01, 2019, 06:02:25 am »
Hi everyone!
As you might have noticed, I run three different systems; Peppermint, Void and NetBSD.
I like them all  :) for different reasons...

My non-Peppermint systems are powered by awesome window manager, https://awesomewm.org/

For me, its becoming a must to use awesome as I no longer own/use a mouse and do almost everything through key-bindings.
I'm considering creating a Peppermint themed awesome wm for own use and would like to know if anyone else here would like to have it as well!?
If so, I'll invest a bit more time on it so it would work on anybodys set-up and not just on mine  ;)

I leave you with a few screenshots of my fully themed NetBSD set-up so you can see what it can look like.

Please reply to this thread if you would like to use awesome on Peppermint  :D

Would this be available as a second session I could choose at the login screen .. so I can choose between an Awesome Window Manager session, and the normal Peppermint desktop ?

I mean it's not going to REPLACE the current Peppermint desktop right ? .. it's in ADDITION to it (as a user choosable session) ?

Yes, user choosable. I'm not planning to fully replace xfwm, but to have awesome as an alternative session.

Very interesting! I was just thinking about windows placement shortcuts for Peppermint. I can help you test it.
There are neither beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.

In that case I personally love the idea and would be VERY interested .. specially if it looks like your BSD/Awesome screenshots, but with a more Peppermint 'red' instead of the orange ;)

Would make for a very interesting option to play with :)

How long did it take you to get used to that type of flow?
For instance:
For the web browser I have lots of tabs open, do you have to cycle  through  each tab or are tabs non existent?
In android for me web browsers really are a pain for my flow.

So basically my question is, what was the learning curve like? Steep?

No need to do it manually, let the wm do the work for you  :)

I'll let you and everyone else know when I have something to test.

The biggest learning curve is that configuration files are written in lua, but you won't need to bother with that. I'll pre-configure most of it, been using awesome for well over a year now.

That aside, there're the key-bindings. Those you just have to learn!

Yes, you still can have tabs on your web browser, but you can also have every tab in its own window and cycle through them, shift focus or re-arrange them on screen using key-bindings.

Just try it. Again, I'll let you know when I have something for you to test.

Looks nice, but don't like tiling WM's myself. Don't like keyboard shortcuts ;)
