Hi Gents,

This morning I tried to install a 32-bit version of Peppermint 9 on a disabled veteran friend's computer, and I couldn't even get the darn computer to boot the flash drive.  The computer is an old Dell Inspiron 3800 running, or more correctly, containing Windows 2000 Professional.

F-12 gives me three options:

1) Internal HDD
2) CD/DVD/CD-DW Drive
3) Cardbus NIC

Now I chanced F-!2 to this Boot Order:

1) Modular Bay HDD
2) Internal HDD
3) CD/DVD/CD RW Drive
4) APR NIC
5) Diskette Drive
6) Cardbus NIC

The problems is that I don't know how to boot into my 32- bit Peppermint 9 Flash drive.  Note:  I don't have this computer with me, but I do meet up with this fellow once a week -- but I've got to wait a week now.  ANY suggestions on how to boot into my Peppermint flash drive would be appreciated.

Thank you,

perknh

Have you gone into BIOS and checked to see if the USB port(s) are enabled?

No, I didn't.  The thought never occurred to me.  But I did see something in the list of options about other disks.  Would you happen to know, offhand, how to access its BIOS?  I'll go back into the computer through F-2 again -- then Alt p.

Thanks, so much, VinDSL.  That's a helpful insight.

As it's a Windows 98 era PC, it probably doesn't have the ability to boot from USB

You'd need to use something like a Plop boot floppy to chainload the LiveUSB

BUT...

I'd expect it to be seriously lacking in RAM and not up to the task of a modern OS (and the internet) .. seriously perknh, don't waste your time with it, they only had a 500Mhz Pentium III and 512MB SDRAM maximum (most shipped with an early Celeron and 128MB RAM) .. it'll boot Peppermint (just about, and after jumping through many hoops to get it installed) but it'd be using the swapfile as soon as you opened anything else, and immediately slow to an agonising crawl.

I'm afraid that laptop is beyond saving and is now only any good as a doorstop/paper-weight.

Thank you, PCNetSpec and VinDSL.  That's a shame.  I love seeing old clunkers come back to life with our beloved Peppermint Linux OS. :(

There's clunkers, and then there's the completely clunked.

[EDIT]

Also the CPU is likely to lack SSE2 support so won't run pretty much any modern browser.

i have one with similar specs here, and it runs antix just fine, but then again antix only uses about 30 megs of ram to get to the desktop, so it is very lightweight.
mine is a 650mhz intel pentium with 512 megs ram maxed....

...and then you open (or attempt to open) a web browser.

As I said, as an exercise in whether Linux can be made to boot that's fine .. as a useful machine not so much, specially if it's job is going to include the interweb.

Yes you could use something like the Lynx browser (and visit the handful of text only static websites) .. but would you really call that useful these days ?

It's a bin job, or an exercise in frustration that ends up with a pretty useless PC .. take your pick.

Welcome back, rjm65!  And thank you, PCNetSpec.

I certainly know the man who owns the old Dell Inspiron 3800 well enough to know that he, like most of the old vets, likes to keep things simple.  So I texted him yesterday and told him NOT to bother bringing the computer back because it can no longer handle a modern OS.  He has asked me, however, if there was any other way around it.  But now that the doctor has spoken, I've got to tell him it's DEAD! :o

Hopefully, he'll get a chance to read this thread himself.  You sure don't get this kind of attention, nor threads like this, with Windows -- los bastados!

Thank you so much guys.  And special thanks for Dr. McCoy for taking the time too -- though that was a tough prognosis to hear!
