Canít login after update
« on: February 08, 2019, 04:05:17 pm »
Hello and thanks In advance for the help.  I just did sudo apt-get upgrade, and then update in terminal. After that, two bad things happened. First, I was unable to restart or shutdown my computer. When I clicked the windows key, then clicked the button to open the shutdown/restart options, I received an error message. So I manually shut down my laptop.
2.  Now when I turn on my laptop, peppermint starts, then asks for my password to log in to my account. But when I enter my pw, it says ďfailed to start session.Ē  Likewise, when I try to log in to a guest session, it says ďfailed to start sessionĒ

I ran BIOS diagnostics on my computer and found no problems. Also I have used peppermint OS on this laptop for some time with no problems.

Help??
ďĒ

At the login screen, hit Ctrl+Alt+F3

Log in in text mode, then run:
Code: [Select]
sudo service lightdm restart
do you get any error message ?

Thank you. No error message. I was able to log in in text mode and input the text. Then it reverted to the original login screen and I was unable to log in for exact same reason as before.

Log in in text mode, then run
Code: [Select]
df -h
do any of the lines contain 100% (or very close), other than any that start with /dev/loop

my dev/sda1 is 48%.  the other 7 or 8 lines are all 0% or 1%.

my friend helped me switch over to the xfce desktop instead of the standard peppermint desktop, and in that way i am able to use my computer relatively normally.  except that every time i push the window key i get a message that says "Failed to send D-Bus Message; no running instance of xfce4-panel was found."

i still want to resolve the previous situation, but thats where its at for the moment so i can continue to access my data.

okay I'm lost now .. so you can log on now or not ?

If not, did this breakage occur immediately after installing LXDE ?

thank you for continuing to help.

first something broke after i updated and i was unable to log in.
second (between my last post on feb 8 and your first post on feb 9) my friend was able to get me back up and running on the LXDE desktop, but not on peppermint.

as of now, i am fully functional on the LXDE desktop, but would like to return to the Peppermint9 original desktop setup.

i would happily accept any kind of reset that allows me to keep my data.

So when you get to the login screen, you're now able to choose between LXDE and Peppermint as the session ?

Can you post the output from
Code: [Select]
ls -a /usr/share/xsessions
and
Code: [Select]
ls -al ~/.config
and
Code: [Select]
sudo fdisk -l
and
Code: [Select]
cat /etc/lsb-release

I'm trying to figure out whether your friend just added an LXDE session to Peppermint, or whether he installed a whole other distro

i am not able to choose.  The startup screen has the original peppermint wallpaper, but then it starts the LXDE desktop.

xsessions says;

On the login screen, to the right of your username is there a little circular icon with the LXDE swift on it ? .. if you click that icon, are you offered "Peppermint" as an option ?

I was set to automatically login to my account.
I changed that, rebooted, and YES, one of the options is "Peppermint [default]".
I selected peppermint, logged in, and am using it now.  Its a reset version (not set up how i had it before), but all my data seems to be there.  the window key doesn't seem to work, but i think i know how to fix that :)
if i can't, i'll make a different post.

thank you for all your help.
