USB2 works okay, but it's S-L-O-W!

That's when you go put the kettle on, make a drink, grab a bag of crisps, and go watch an episode of Stargate / Farscape / Trek, etc.

True that...  ;)

Oh, and thanks for the pic .. it reminded me I need to get another HDD cloning dock, my old one broke.

I have 3 Thermaltake BlacX external drives.
2 are USB 2 with eSata [...]

Noice!

Sounds like the same identical model that I own:

I've been using it for a decade (purchased in 2008). It's indestructible.

Just saying...  ;)

Okay I confess, I shoulda said "I broke my old one" :-[
(but it does prove they are definitely destructible if you try hard enough :)))

Heh. Yeah, I can keep stuff running forever. It's a blessing and a curse. That said, I'm a great guy to have around when you're 50 miles offshore, and your boat engine quits running [emoji41]

Oh sure, there's always a lot that can be done with gaffer tape/duct tape/string/chewing gum .. but they don't help with a circuit board that's in multiple pieces, at some point you have to call it a day and admit it's not worth the effort or beyond your tool set.
(hopefully you're not off coast at the time, but then you'd likely not give up so quickly)

Theoretically I could solder wire bridges across the pieces and I'd maybe attempt that if at sea and my life depended on it, but I'm happily sat in a warm comfortable office (with ebay/amazon at hand) and the things are dirt cheap :))

BIG difference between being able, and being willing .. the older I get, the quicker I just give up and buy .. I used to see things like this as a challenge and a learning experience and would spend hours/days trying to fix it, now I figure I'd be better off just buying a new one and using that time for something else :)
(time seems a bit more valuable these days)

More than a year later I am happy to report that Peppermint is still being used on that machine.
The user reported today that she really likes her Chromebook replacement. Her words, but I shall take them. Basically she runs Chrome.
She even runs her updates!!
